A SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT wasgiven in the Eldon Hall on Wednesday evening, the 14th inst., under the auspices of Siar of Peace Division. The Hall was filled with an intelli- gent and appreciative audience, and a two hours programme was attentively listened to. A handsome aum was realized. To this end they are beginning to see that they must co- operate, and thus we hear of a Dairymans’ Association. By the way, a very important conference is to be held at Gloucester, Eng- land, on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th inst, The object is to consider ‘‘the needsof dairy farm- ing to meet the requirements of the future.

Tue members of St. Mary’s young men’s temperance and benevolent society, of Hali- fax, gave an ‘‘at home” to Archbishop O’Brien, on Friday evening, at their rooms, Hope Hall. There were about one hundred present, and His grace was received with ap- plause on entering the room, accompanied by Monsignor Power. The rooms of the club are certainly the best furnished and most home- like of any possessed by a temperance socicty and speak volumes for the success which 1s attending it. The streets in the vicinity of Smaliwood’s factory are in such a deplorable condition that, in case of fire, it would be almost im- possible to get the engines to the tank, An | attempt at repairing these streets has heen | made by filling the holes with soft clay; but instead of being any benefit, it has actually made them worse. In order to make any improvement, it will be necessary to fill the holes with stones.
