ANNOUNCEMENTS

Natural Areas Public Lecture — Our former Natural History Society president, Diane Griffin, now residing in Edmonton will visit the Island and will be giving a lecture entitled"Exﬂoghxﬂ.Resawes-Sawug (nu Nannal majrage" on Feb. 8, 1978 at 8:30 p.m. Diane will out- line the system of natural areas in Alberta and compare it to the system on Prince Edward Island. We urge anyone with an interest

in the preservation of our special areas to attend this talk which will be held in Duffy Amphitheatre at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Change in our Constitution - A small change in our constitution is necessary for the Natural History Society to officially become a non-profit organization, and we can achieve a tax-free status. This will be quite beneficial with reference to our financial dealings with the Canadian Nature Federation Conference which we are hosting next August. We hereby serve notice that proposed changes will be brought to the floor at the March 1978 Natural History Society meeting.

The Constitution and By-laws must be amended to include a non-profit clause to the effect that:

the organization shall be carried on without the purpose of gain for its members and any profits or other accretions to the organization shall be used in promoting its objects.

Membership Dues paid for 1978, 41 Regular, 8 Family, 3 Student. A FINAL NOTICE will go out with this newsletter to each person who has not renewed. After the final notice, there will be THREE WEEKS to renew. Cheques should be made to: THE NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OF P.E.I., C/o Margaret Mallett, 53 Fitzroy Street, Charlottetown, P.E.I. ClA 1R4.

Projects For The Society

The Natural History Society has a limited amount of funds ($400 - 800) for the promotion of environmental education or conservation oriented projects. Such a project, or projects, should benefit the public at large, while still being financially feasible. If you have any suggestions for the use of funds please bring them to the February meeting or submit them in writing to:

Starlings Well—groomed Birds. Jan. 23 and 24. A dozen starlings were getting dry—cleaned in fluffy snow. Fluttering wings raised a small snowstorm. This recalled the day of the Hillsborough bird count when starlings were observed throwing up a spray of icy water in a small puddle. All these ablutions took place about noon. — Margaret Mallett
