Walk home program established at UPEI

Students find safety on campus with alternative service

A “walk home program” was set up approximately four weeks ago to provide students witha safe alternative to walk- ing alone on UPEI grounds. This walk home program was set up by the students for the students, aiming to make stu- dents feel safer while on cam- pus.

“Specifically, it is two students posted at the front desk of Bernardine [Hall] who are on call in the evening hours to walk members of the uni- versity anywhere on or around the near vicinity of the cam- pus,” explained Ducan Crawford, one of 30 volun- teers, male and female involved in this program.

The walkers are never alone. The presence of mem- bers of both sexes is likely to make the student being walked home less uncomfortable.

The program is not set up solely for residence stu- dents. Any individual oncam- pus may call 566-0524, and request to be accompanied to or from any on-campus loca- tion.

some scheduling problems. It is most likely to be reinstated at the beginning of the upcoming semester. The vol- unteers apologize for the in- convenience, and assure the public that all will be taken care of as soon as possible.

Canadian Federation of Engineering Students

On December 6, 1989, a terrible event occurred at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec. On this day, aman walked into the classroom, ordered all the men to leave, and opened fire on the women in the room. Fourteen lives were lost, twelve engineering students were not allowed to pursue their goals. The violence and senselessness of this act shocked and enraged everyone across Canada.

In the since this tragedy, we have grown, in different ways for different people. Many do not recall that day and many of our current students were still in high school or junior high when it happened. Others find the anger and hurt not dulled and are still seeking answers, a remedy for the pain of this day.

On this day, we need to remember the many victims of this event, their families, classmates, friends, and finally, Ecole Polytechnique. We also need to remember the violence associated with that day and reflect on our own actions. It is importantto commemorate this event ina respectful way, and to reflect on the volence against women and violence in this

society.
