A vamity named Hicks, residing in Char- leston, [l., became demented a short time ago. Those most effected were the father aud the mother, a 15-year-old daughter and a li-year-old son. They were about to crucify one of their children on a cross which they had previously made, when neighbors inter- fered. They are now under lock and key at the jail here, awaiting legal process to be sent to an asylum.

Tue market to-day was largely attended and abundantly stocked. Butter had an upward tendency, selling at from twenty to twenty-five cents per pound; eggs were also on the rise, and sold at from fifteen to seven- teen cents; common cheese sold at five to six cents per pound; while new milk cheese brought from fitteen to sixteen cents; new potatoes were scarce, they sold at from fifteen to sixteen cents per peck.

Lonpon, Aug 7. M. Krazouski, once a Polish Author, has been convicted of being connected with a conspiracy and sentenced to two years im- prisonment. A Heavy Bank Failure. Sr. Arparns, Vt., Aug. 7. The Vermont National Bank of St. Albains, Hon. Bradley Barlow, President, closed the doors this morning causing great consternation among depositors. Barlow is aiso President and owner of the South Eastern Railway of Canada.

The Cholera. Lonpon, Aug. 7- In the House of Commons this afternoon Mr. Gladstone stated that the cholera had greatly delayed every plan, and that the early withdrawal of the British troops from that country is not a as a stable Go-, vernment must be established in Egypt before they are re-called.

Republicanism in Spain.

Maprip, Aug. 7.

The troops in the fortress of Badajoz, on the Portuguese frontier, having deposed their commander, took possession of the city, shut the gates of the fort, and declared in favor of a Republic. They demand a constitution similar to that of 1869, and proclaim Zorilta for President. The King has sent troops to suppress the revolt, and a state of siege has been proclaimed.

Bradiaugh’s Demonstration. Lonpon, Aug. 7. Thirty thousand people attended the Bradlaugh demonstration at Trafalgar Square, and protested strongly against his exclusion from Parliament.

Another Account. Lonpon, Aug. 7.

A great demonstration took place to-day in Trafalgar Square, the object of which was to protest against the exclusion of Bradlaugh from the House of Commons. There were 30,000 persons present. The meeting passed a resolution favoring resist- ance by Bradlaugh of the mandate of the House of Commons. Copies of the resolu- tions were forwarded to the Queen, (ilad- stone, and to the Speaker of the House.

Home From Wimptevon,—Trooper Geo. Langstroth, one of New Brunswick’s conting- ent to Wimbledon, arrived home on Saturday, having come by the Polynesian to Rimouski, thence to his home. Among the others who came by the same steamer were Lieut. H. ©. Chamberlain, Lieut. H. Smith, Lieut. P. Dillon, Sergt. R. P. Doyle, Sergt. F. Kennedy, Sergt. D. Smith and Corp. J, G. Gourie. The winnings of the teams this year were about equal to those of former years, though the weather at one stage was very bad for shooting But the team made a better stand than Tost year.

New Cuxarpers.—The Cunard Steamship Company have contracted with John Elder & Co., of Glasgow, for the building of two steamers on a scale, which, it is said, will be in advance of anything that has yet been de- vised for the Atlantic service. The ships are to be of 8,000 tons burden each and of 13,000 horse power. The sum jnyested constitutes the contract the largest that has ever been made in the ship owning and shipbuildin world. The price is in excess of £60, for each, and it is designed that the two vessels shall make a speed of nineteen knots per hour, or to cross the Atlantic in less than six days.
