Today there is some contusion about the meaning of charity. Its meaning has been so emptied and watered down that it hardly re- sembles the meaning it has in the Gospels. In the popular mind, charity today is associated with such things as humaniterianism, philanthropy. community chests, orphanages and hostels for the poor. To be an object of charity according to this conception, car- ries with it a sense of shame.
This is not so with the Gospel meaning of charity which is something far above mere phil- anthropl; something deeper than the mere exterior act. or contri- buting oi the community chest.
True Christian charity is the love or God and of our neighbor, as they are seen through the eyes of ieith. It is the love which cor- responds to the knowledge we have by faith.
