Hughes—Hayden.
St. Paul’s Church was the scene of a quiet wedding yesterday, at whieh Rev. E P Flewelling officiated. The contracting parties were W B Hughes, foreman of the Telegram news room, and Clara, third daughter of Mrs. Alex. Hayden, Homer Street. The wedding was before relatives of the contracting parties only.
Among the wedding presents was a hand- some marble clock, with bronze statuette and plate, presented by the Telegram staff, with all of whom Mr. Hughes is popular, They will be at home at 412 Pender

There is a lively little row in certain clerical circles in Boston over the recall to England of Rev. Father Hall, of the Society of St. Juhn the Evangelist, a Pro- testant monastic order. Mr. Hall has been doing good work in Boston as 4 missionary. It ig insinuated that he is recalled because he is too American, and there are some who believe that he proposed to head an independent branch of this seciety on this continent. The Boston papers do not like his recall, because there is supposed to be an anti-American English feeling at the bottom of it. Mr. Hall has taken the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience; and of course he must obey. It is very regrettable that over a matter of this kind any feeling should be excited. Even generally moderate journals see in the removal & “foreign order

Mr. Hall is a member of an organization which undertakes to do good to mankind without regard to boundary lines. Mr. Brewer is a gentle- man, | think he sheuld offer some explanation for chafling Mr, Simpsou for being ‘absorbed in matins and evensong.” Mr. Brewer has not only insulted Mr. Simpson, but every other clergyman of the Church of England, since they are all obliged to say matins and evensong (morning and evening prayer) *‘daily througheut the year.” What would any Me‘ hodist think of Mr. Simpson if he chaffed at Mr. Brewer for reading his Bible and praying extempore?

Sir,—After a great deal of unnecessary correspondence and the most extraordinary amount of backing and filling on the part of John Albert Smith, Junior, wheelman, of O'Leary, the bicyclists of Charlottetown have utterly failed to bring this gentleman to terms. We should have thought that after having gone to the expense of a trip to thecity and the pompous maaner in which he announced his registration at the Davies House, he meant business. We understand that this genius is still blowing of what he can do, Unless he ‘‘puts up” he had better shut up, and not render him- self the laughiag stock of the community. Telephones 2,000 Years Old.
English travellers and officersin India who have managed, through favoritism with the priests, to gain access to some of the half-ruined temples of Panj, acity about 200 miles from Madras, have learned that the principles of the telephone have been known in that country for thousands of years. Inthe city of Panj there are two temples about a mile apart. In the in- terior, on the ground floor of each, there is a small circular roof guarded day and night from natives as well as strangers. These rooms are supposed to be the abiding place of ** governing spirits,” but in reality are the termini of a telephone lines which is laid underground from one building to the other.
The superstitious natives regard these little circular rooms with the greatest awe, because they have had demonstrated toe them on various occasions the power of these “governing spirits” to communicate with the other temple. When this miracle is being performed the natives are required to make their offerings in one building and make known their wishes and desires, Then, upon immediately repairing to the other temple, they are informed of all they have said and done. Tous this is all easy enough, but to the superstitious natives of India it is proof that the priests are supernatural beings. Those who have visited these telephone- cennected temples say that the transmitters are of wood, and that they are about the size of the bead of a flour barrel. The wire is said to be neither steel, copper nor brass, but of a substance closely resembling the latter metal. Old worm-eaten transmitters, said to be 2,000 years old, have been shown those fortunate enough to gain admission to these temples.
