H. M.S. “Grirroy,” was the centre of attraction this afternoon. Large crowds of our citizens, and many others availed them- gelves of Commander Davies’ kindness, and visited the ship. Carprain Drury, of A Battery, Quebec, is now in St. John, N. B., enlisting recruits for his battery. They will be required to serve three years, and; they will receive as pay forty-five ceats per day, besides clothing and rations, but an extra amount of two cents per day the first year and three cents per day the second year for good conduct.

Tue subscribers to the Prince Edward Island Hospital are reminded of the meeting te be held in the Schoolroom of St. Puuis Charch to-morrow, (Thursday) at 7.30 p. m. for the purpose of appointing Trustees, and taking action upon the report of the Committee on by-laws, and Hospital premises. It is very desirable that all who have subscribed to the funds of the Hospital should be in punctual attendance.

A Fire broke out in Simm’s Brush Factory, on Monday night, and before it could be got ander control, the whole building was burnt to the ground. The building was occupied by Mess. T. S. Simms & Co., brush manufac- turers: Messrs. Tux third annual session of the Provincial Educational Institute Association, closed last evening, with a Literary and Musical Enter- tainment; but the real work of the session was over, after the afternoon Meeting. Yester- day morning, Professor Mellish read an inter- esting and valuable paper on ‘‘Thoroughness in the Work of Education, a Necessity of our Country." His remarks were listened to with great attention. The afternoon session was opened with an amusing and instructive paper on “Human Respect,” by Domitian Gallant Msq. Mr. Gallant made some gooe points, which deserve the earnest considera- tion of those who had the pleasure of hearing him. At eight o'clock P. m., the entertain- ment opened with an nstrumental Solo, by Miss M. McLecd, foliowed by Mr. Gallant, who repeated his essay of the afternoon. Miss Harris’ Solo was very pretty and very nicely sung. A song from Mrs. Gaul is always a pleasing part of a programme. Miss M cLeod and Miss Barr delighted the audience with a vocal Duet, which was perhaps the best feature of the whole entertainment. It being Miss Fennessy’s first appearance me performer she lacked the confidence in herse customary to old stagers, and consequently a think she hardly did herself justice. The readings were, with but one or two excep- tions, not up to the mark. Not only were the selections, as aarule, poor, but the readers themselves helped to make them worse. But as was said above, there were a few excep- tions, among whom were Miss H. Lawson, Mr. E. Harris, and one or two others. Miss Lawson, however, did not read as well as usual, owing, doubtless, to the fact that = had but little time to make preparation. .
