This year Nature is against the British {armer. The season hes been disastrous from the beginning, d there is now no hope that it will end n any~ thing but calamity. Raing have fallen incessantly. ‘The crops, even the best of them, have nowhere attained more than a middling yrowth, and now the continued floods destroy all expectation

of an average product in any part of)

the British Islands. Ireland is much better off ; yet even there, in many parts, the people are

likely to sui‘er severely for want of

food during part of the coming winter.

On the Continent the situation is much less gloomy; but in France, in western Switzerland, in southern Ger- many and in Holland it is still a bad season. The general state of the dif- ferent crops may be summarily de- scribed as follows :

Hay—-Inferior in Ireland, very bad indeed in England, poor in France, bet- ler in Switzerland ; and in southern Germany and in Holland about the same as in France.

Oats—A wretched crop in every country where I have been. In Ireland and in ngland hardly worth harvest~ ing ; in France and the other parts of the continent to which I have referred, perhaps good enough to pay the ex- pense of harvesting.

Lucerne and millet—poor every- where.

Potatoes—Quite as poor as the oats —evervwhere a bad crop. In Ireland especially, and in France poorer than any other crop. A good potato will be a rarity in all these portions of Kureps for a year tocome. The fail- ure of the potatoes is in fact as nearly complete as possible and leave any po- tatoes ut all; and this is the case where ever my observation has ex- tended.

Wheat—Poorest of all in England and Ireland, where I should say the yield cannot pay more than half its cost. In France there will be perhaps about three quarters of a good average, and that country will be able to furn- isi its own bread for the coming year. The same is true of western Switzer- land, southern Germany and Holland. But the United Kingdom will have to seelx for its supplies elsewhere.

The only crop that seems to me at all satisiactory is that of vetebes, of which, so far as Ican judge, the yield is likely to be tolerable.

In Russia, on the other hand, an immense wheat crop is reported, and heavy purchase have been made ,there on Western account.

Yet one bad harvest or a dozen of them will not ruin England.

Great Enterprises.

The present time is fertile in schemes of great magnitude. There are already projected :—

A new suspension bridge over Niagara river ;

A new Atlantis cable in addition to that now in process of constructiva ;

A ship canal across the Isthmus of Da- rien ;

A ship railroad across the same strip of land, separating two oceans ;

A railroad ‘over the desert of Sahara connecting Algeria and Soudan,

A canal whieh, conveying the waters of the Mediterranean into the sands of Africa shall make a great inland sea and fertil- ize arid wastes ;

The establ shment of water commu— nication between the Black and Caspian Seas.

Add to those enterprises most of which seems likely to be undertakea in the near future :

Ericson’s scheme for utilizing the sun’s heat;

Edison’s scheme for utilizing electri- city ;

The various plans of geographical dis- covery ;

‘The solution ‘of the mysteries of Central Africa, end the civilization ot its savages.

The destruction of the world’s plagues ;

The cw wncipation of every slave ;

Universal edueation ;

‘The adjustment of the relations of labor and capital. The solution of the population ques- tion.

I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be “too good to true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In readingin your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like arene ar be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles.- Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite eured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head.
