Decline in Land Values in Britain.

As illustrating the decline in the valu of landed property in Great Britain, the result of the recent attempt to sell auction the Houghton estates of the Mar quis of Cholmondeley, is significant. The first lot put up consisted of Houghton Hall, which cost £45,000 for the building alone, and about 10,660 acres of land. ‘The best bid was £300,000, and the property was therefore withdrawn. % farm’ of 2:322 acres renting for £900 a year, was next pu up, and bid in at £24,500. Then a farm -t 1,001 acres, rented at £744, was bid im i £21,000. Another farm of 1,205 acres, renting for £600, was bid in at £21,000 Two other farms, one of G00 acres and one of 700 acres, were also withdrawn betau: the limit was not reached. Coffining Whiskey.

A Boston whiskey dealer bought a cheap cothn, put four and seven-eicht gallons ot rye whiskey inside, screwed a plate on the lid of the coffin, on which were engrav- ed the name, age and birthplace of the alleged corpse, boxed the coffin, as is usual, and shipped it to a town in Maine. There the undertaker took charge of the box: and drove ten miles into the country before the cotin was opened and the liquor removed.

Asout half-past twelve o'clock yesterday morning a burglar visited the residence of Judge Palmer, St. John, N. B. He effe: ted an entrance through a window and proceeded to help himself. In so doing he awoke the servant man, the only person in the house at the time. who chased the burglar down stairs and captured him. A severe tussle ensued, during which the servant man was seriously injured about the face and hands, and the burglar escaped.
