ANTI-NUCLEAR | DEMONSTRATION PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER 23rd.

The Energy Committee of the ENVIRONMENTAL COALITION OF P.E.I. is organising a public

demonstration of opposition to nuclear power to be held in Charlottetown on Monday, September 23rd.

The rally and march will be in support of the CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR PHASE-OUT, which is lobbying M.P.’s to vote fora bill which would place

a 50 year moratorium on new licences for non- medical nuclear facilities.

If the Private Member’s Bill, C-204, passes second

reading (scheduled for September 26th.) It will go to Committee for Parliamentary hearings.

Fora Private Member’s Bill, M.P.’s are allowed a free vote, so the immediate goal of the Campaign is to pursuade M.P.’s to let the Bill pass second reading (even if they plan to vote against it at the third and final reading). This would allow an open parliamentary enquiry into all aspects of nuclear energy; an enquiry which the Conservative government has promised three times in the last few years but has not yet delivered.

As long as there is no proven, safe, long-term (thousands of years) disposal for nuclear wastes, new . nuclear plants should not be built. As the saying

The rally will begin at Province House on Richmond Street (Basilica Rec. Centre if raining) at 11 a.m., . with a press conference, music and statements from various groups.

The march will proceed down Richmond Stto Prince St, and to the Maritime Electric building fora symbolic presentation, then finally to the office of George Proud M.P. for another presentation.
