After his arrival in Prince Edward Island, the Bishop’s Diary continues as follows :-—

The largest vessels can harbor in this bay (Bedeque), even at that time (July 1) there were in it from eight to ten. Scarcely had we cast agchor when a shallop drew up alongside, having ov board the Rev. Angus McEachern, mis- mionary of the island, who had received only the evening before the letter ad- dressed him by the Bishop, and had set out at once, but then too late, to meet him at Gedaique (Shediac). He was welcomed as a man most valuable under the circumstauces for he alone could act as a safe guide jn those missions to

There was not a bay, a har- bor, a creek, a point, a shoal, or an eleva- tion, which he could not point out ; not a footpath with which he was not familiar not a family, whether Catholic or Protes tant, French or Scotch, of which he did not know both old avd young, not a1 estate of the value of which he could not give a correct estimate. Having emi- grated from Scotland inv 1790 with his household and a coleny of his country- men, he commerced to exercise his sacred ministry for their benefit as soon as he was provided with the authoriza- tion of the bishop of the diocese.. Since that time he has labored without ceasing for the salvation of souls. The presence of Peres de Coloune and Pichard only gave his zeal the oppo:tunity of exer- citing itself in behalf of the Scotch Catholics ot Cape Breton and the majp- land of Nova Scotia, of which mention shall be made hereafter. After their departure, which took place in 1803 and 1804 respectively, he confined himself evtirely within the limits of the island, because it was impossible for him to extended his labors beyond them. The Scotch and Freuch are equally loud iu their praises of his watchfuluess and puuctuality.his conversation bespeaks the virtuous priest, who, while devoted heart and soul to the discharge of the duties of his sacred office, does not forget what courteay demands of him, and knows how to make himself respected by all. He has contributed largely to the enjoyment and edification of this year’s mission during the six weeks that he has accom- panied it,

Everybody knows that the island of St. Jobo is one of the tin the Gulf; it is from 40 to 45 leagues long and from 8 to 12 wide. It contains numerous harbors, of which the most importiot are those of Three Rivers or Cardigan Bay on the south-east and of Charlotte in the middle. Its soil is generally fer- tile, though somewhat sandy. The people sometimes suffer grievously from the ravages of mice, which, in certain years, spread themselves in countless swarms throughout the country, devour- ing not only the grain, but even the
