Tre Moncton J'imes reports that the plans for the proposed General Railway Offices building, as approved by the department, have been received from Ottawa, and that the building is to be much larger and more costly thon «as suggested by the plans forwarded by the officials here as noticed some time ago. It js to be 170 feet long, 56 feet wide and three stories high and of the very best description as to architectural design and otherwise. It is to be of brick and stone, with slate roof, It promises to be an ornament to the town and the erpenditure of money in its construction sad on the proposed Custom House during the coming summer cannot fail to be of consider- thle local advantage. ‘Tenders for part of the work on the General Offices building will be iavited, it is expected, in about ten days.

Last Wednesday afternoon three gentle- men, well known in boating circles here, left Peake’s No. 1 Wharf, in the yacht ‘‘ Syndi- cate.” At the time of their departure a good. stiff breeze was blowing, which they thought would continue until their return, They, therefore did not take the necessary oars to

pel their craft in the event of a calm. Now, for once their calculations were erroue- ous, as the sequel will show. After sailing wp and down the harbor several times, enjoy- ing the exhilarating breezes, the effect of which must be experienced to be appreciated, the noble trio thovght it was about time to tarn their little craft in the direction of home. But no sooner had they decided upon doing this than a calm set in, the sails flapped loosely against the masts, and the yacht refused to move. No friendly boat was to be seen. The fates appeared to be against them. They thought of writing a note, detailing the cir- cumstances of their sad fate, corking it up in abottle, and transmitting it to the tender mercies of the waters, But, alas! no bottle

could be found, and this course had to be abandoned. A horrible fate stared them in the face. Visions of the life of Robinson

Crusoe flitted rapidly before them. They feared a like fate was in store for them. Lots Were drawn, and one of their number was appointed to watch for a friendly sail or breeze, while the others slept. Thus time passed on, alas, too slowly for our friends, who Were longing for daylight in order to discover their position, and to ascertain how far they had drifted during the night. But the dark- et night must have its morning, and this one Was not an exception. Morning came at last, and with it a god stiff breeze, which fitled the tails of the good ckiff “Syndicate” with wind, aud the hearts of the crew with gladness. With a fervent ‘“‘thank God,” the delighted Yachtenen turned their craft in the direction of home, which they reached in a short time. 9a landing on terra firma they vowed they Would aever; well, hardly ever, go sailing again—without oars.

LETTERS T0 THE EDITOR.

Sir,—In glancing over the speech of Mr. L. H. Davies, reported in the last Pioneer, (which was heralded by a flourish of trum- pets in a former number), I observea witticism from the pen of the Rev. Sydney Smith, a well known politician and humor- ist of a former age, once applied to Eng- land, but which, from the context, Mr. D. appears to think was written about the year 1830 or 1840. I have not the means of reference at hand, but the learned gentle- man appears to have stumbled over an old number of the Edinburgh Review, and to have applied what was written many years ago, when England was carrying on her Continental War and needed every penny she could raise by taxation, to the future of Prince Edward Island. I am, Mr. Editor, old enough to remember to have read Mr, Smith’s very talented Philippic many years ago, indeed when I was a boy— I am afraid to say how long since. Mr Smith was editer of the Edinburgh Review in 1802, and continued to write in it, as a contributor and friend of Lord Broughaw and Mr. Jeffery, a subsequent editor for some years. At the time Mr. Smith wrote there was some truth in his observations, which are of course written in the language of party, but most of the taxes he refers to were either taken off or modified after the pesce, and we need not fear either the window tax or that on hair powder here in Prince Edward Island.
