about to be tried. One of these machines manufactured in England, ‘has reached Fargo and a subscription list is being cir- culated to raise money to give it a day’s trial. If it proves to be what the company claim for it beyond a donbt, it will come isto general use throughout the Red River valley. The company have a contract for plowing 1,500 acres of prairie land in Valley City, also contracts for a large amount of breaking in town of Hope, Dak ee THE report of the directors submitted to the annual meeting of the Cunard Steam- ship Company showed that the net profits of the year amounted to £159 849 and that after providing for depreciation, insurance, ete., and setting aside £11.123 to reserve fund, there remained a sum of £49,331. which was appropriated to the payment of dividend (£48 000), at the rate of three per cent., and in carrying £1,331 to profit and loss account. There was a reduction of net profits compared with 1880, atiributable to he falling off in receipts in t'e Atlantic ,ho neward trade and the unavoidable delay in the d-livery of new vessels) Tne Cunard fleet is at present in the highest state of efficiency. ee ee A CLever ¢ Raub. —Yesterday, in unload- ing a number of egg-cases from a freight wagon at the Intercolonial steamers’ freight house. which had be-n shipped from P. E. Island, and were on their way to Boston, the clerk noticed that one of the cases was light at one end. On examining the case his suspicions proved to be correct, and it was discovered that only the top tiers of the ca:eshad been filled with eggs and those underneath were empty, so that about six- teen d-zen eggs were misting. Had he not noticed the discrepancy theconsignee would have been able to call upon the Company for the missing eggs. The exposure of the deception shows that either the original shipper, who belongs to a well-known Is- land firm, deliberately sent the eggs in that manner with intent to defraud tne com- pany as well as the consignees, or else that some very clever thieves had access to the consignment since they were shipped.—St. John News. en Report or Steamer ‘‘ Carrox.”’-—The Ameiican steamer ‘‘ Carroll,” Captain Wright, from Boston, which left this port on Tursday afterncon for Charlottetown, P. Prince Edward Islanders on the Wing.

Quite a number of Prince Edward Island- ers were at the Moncton Station last even- ing They numbered probably 40 or 50 in ali, and were bound forManitoba, Minne- sota, Dakota and Ovlorado, excepting a few who intended rematving in this Pro- vince. They came over in the Island boat yesterday, reaching here in the afternoon express and going North last night at mid- night. One young man, bound for Winni- peg, in a conversation with a Times reporter said he was merely going out to see what the chances were, and if he did not think he conld better himself he would return, He said he had a farm at Crapaud, which he had rented for the season. In answer to a question as to the capabilities of the soil on the Island, he said he did not believe there was any better country in the world for most crops, and his principal reason for leaving was that his farm was too small. His is only a 50 acre farm, which he considers rather small for profit.

Clydesdale Horses.

The American Agriculturist for June has an exceptionally fine engraving of the Clydesdale stallion *‘ Nubian,” and from the accompanying ar.icle we extract the following :

**As a basis for breeding, American draft- horse breeders have selected as if by com- mon consent two hreeds—the Percheron (inclu ling the inevi ab!e mixvure of the less good Norman tloed), and the Clydesdale Horse. They are both excellent, and each may well have their arrant admirers and ac vocates.

Tue C:ydesdales have, however, one im- mense advantage. They have been bred from the first—that is from early in the present century, say from 1810-20, with caretully preserved pedigrees, which are the subject of record. They show the result, in persistency of type, in steady improvement, and in the in- creasing demand for the horses, both for labor avd fur breeding. They possess an- other advantage, nawely, color, Aithough there is a family of Gray Clydes which find favor, yet, in the long rua, dark colors have a decided advantage over greys in the market. The Clydes are large, yet in size the old English cart horse is superior, but he has the reputation of beiag a soft, fleshy-iimbed beast. They have good feet, yet one may hardly say ‘‘ none have bet- ter’; though it would be hard to name a breed that has, without fear of eontradic- tion. They are hardy and tough when mature: last well at slow heavy work, and among them, those wh ch do not naturally reach great size and weight, trot off freely, and with ease move heavy loads at a brisk pace. They ave neat heads, weil set on arching necks; their breasts are deep and broad ; backs short, connect- ing the magnificent sloping shoulders with the massive loins ; barrel cylindrical, and well ribbed back. Toough standing 16 to 17 hands high, and weighing 1,500 to 2,000 pounds, they have the look of low-set, pony-built horses, which is due to the shoituess of their limbs, and to the weight of bone in them, The legs are flat, with hard firm teuduvs, and are remurkably free fiom bony growths, splints. spavius, ete. A fancy which we con hardly approve, has l.d to the encouragewent of an enormous growth of hair upon the legs and fetlocks, and this is now regarded as indicative of purity of blood, Heavy wanes and fore- ocks are also prized.

Mr F. W) Fixx, money clerk at the American Express office, Kansas City, Mo., was interviewed by the reporter. Mr, Fisk said the St. Jacobs Oil is known to about every express messenger and employee of the company, and is wsed by them for a variety of ills, such as rheumatiew, neural. gia, sprains, ete. Mr. Fisk stated tuat he had been using it a long time for sprains and brnises, and always found relief. Upon ove occasion, while g-tting off a train, he slij ped and burt his knee very badiy. The hurt was so severe that it laid hia up. He applied S. Jacubs Oil and was restored very soon. Mr. Fisk saye the Oil is the best thing he k sows tor taking soreness out of one’s limbs after violent exercise. When in college he used to be a boating man. Ali the college crews used Ss. Jacobs Oil for the above-mentioned pur- pose. It seems to be understood generally as the quickest and surest rewedy for all soreness of the flesh, and pain arising from sprain or muscalar contraction, He also recommends it to all safferers of rheu- matism.

His Grace, the Duke of Manchester, Lord Elphinstone, Commodore Janus Ashbury, R. Tenant, Esq., M. P., Mr. R. jr, Mr. Green, Mr. Green, Mr. Brand and Major Chaplin, all of England, arrived at Niayara Fails on the 17'h. They were driven to the various points of interest about Nisgara. On the 18th they proceeded to Chicay , spending one day there. Then they will yo direct through to Manitoba, where th» Duke will perfect his colouization schemes for the eettlement of the Canadian North West territories.
