While it is a fine thing for de- clarer to always plan his play in advance, he should remember that he is not playing in a vac- uum, and that he has real, live opponents who will not sit idly by as he attempts to .xecute his plan.

East won the spade lead with the ace, and 'since his partner had opened the deuce, thus show- inga four-card suit, he was able to place declarer with three spades. East therefore returned a trump to prevent a possible spade ruff in dummy. '

The-30 - odd boats and 100 barges operating along the 1,400- mile route from Alberta-railheads to the Arctic Ocean are expected to handle. a record tonnage. Some estimates are that it will increase .10 per cent over last year’s peak 222,284 tons.

It’s a big, expensive business crowded into‘n four-month navi- gation season, starting in late May and ending in October with the freezeup that sends boats scurrying into the nearest ports. Last fall, three vessels Were caught in the ice.

' AWAIT SUPPLIES

From Yellowknife to Tuktoyak— tut-t, dozens of Arctic and sub- Arctic settlements are waiting for shipments of fuel oil, ma— chinery, building materials, food and clothing. When. navigation closes, theywill be left with only supplies by aircraft.

The northern customers, will, pay'rmghly $5,000,000 for the wa- ter transport — most of it to Crown - owned Northern Trans- portation Company, which handles close to 80 per cent of all freight moving in the Canadian north. For Edmonton suppliers, its a' $50,000,000-a year business.

Most of the shipping begins at Waterways, the Northern Alberta Railway terminus 250 miles north of Edmonton. From there, it’s 1,400 miles toTuktoyaktuk, where the Mackenzie—with headwaters, Canada’s longest mien—empties into the Beaufort Sea.

The first leg —- and the first navigational problem —— is down the north - floWing Athabasca River 100 miles to Lake Atha- basca. Where river meets lake, water is shallow in late summer, and river channels shift so fre-

Adding to the high cos-t of northern freight is a 16~mile se- ries of rapids on the lower Slave. between Fort Fitzgerald, Alta.. and Fort Smith, administrative cent-re of the Northwest Terri- tories. All goods must be trucked around the rapids.

About 80 miles across Great Slave Lake is one of the fleet’s biggest ports of call —: Yellow-I knife. From there, it’s mostly‘ clear sailing along the Mackenzie to Fort Providence, Fort Simp~ son, Nonman Wells, Hort Good Hope, Arctic Red River, Aklavik and its new East Three townsite, Tuktoyakt-uk, and the Arctic Coast. ‘

There is, one other portage. It extends nine miles along the Great Bear River, which empties 11,000 - square — mile Great Bear Lake into the Mackenzie. Again, goods bound for Port Radium on the lake’s eastern shore must be trucked aro v d the river rap-ids.

F. M. Br erick, general man- ager of Northern Transportation, says'the swift - flowing Great Bear River is one of the northern operators" biggest headaches. On one 38-mile riyer stretch, boats move downstream in less than three hours. Getting back up the same stretch takes 12 to 13 hours.
