Mr. J. QO. Arsenault returned from Arichat last night, having attended there the Acadian Convention, and where he was elected President for Prince Edwar: Island. He was accompanied -by Mr. 8. Jackson paid a visit to his old friends at Bay View and Caven~ dish last week, and preached to them an able and eloquent Gospel sermon on Sun-~ day evening, from the text lat Corinthians 3.11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The church at Cavendieh was much over- crowded—many persons being compelled to stand; and the discourse was listened to with the utmost attention. The United States Consul at Leipzig deals in a recent report with an invention that is expected to greatly increase the utility of the telephone. tt has been de~ vised by a Dane named Paulsen, and its ‘purpose is to register a message when no one is present to receive it, so that it can be repeated afterwards from the instru- ment to which it was sent. The person called up has only to hold the trumpet to his earupon returning to the office, even after an absence of days, to receive the message. Many inventors have tried to effect such a combination, but all failed on account of the difficulty

of transferring the message onto a wax cylinder. Instead of a wax cyliuder Pauleen used a flexible steel band in his phonograph, which is much simpler in construction than the Edison phonograph. Messages are much more easily removed from the steel band than from the wax cylinder. It is wound on two spools, moving quickly from one to the other and coming in contact with a very small elec« tro magnet, switched into the circuit, which affects the steel band in such a way as to record on it any sound that may penetrate tothe phonograph. It is only necessary to cause the steel band to re- pass the magnet inorder to have the sounds repeated. Each vibration of the electro magnet produces a corresponding vibration of the steel band. In order to remove @ message from the steel band a magnet is passed over the surface on which the message was recorded.

The test recently made in the engineer ing department of the Copenhagen Telephone Company, whose service the inventor has recently entered, were sure prisingly euccessful. ‘Up to the present time the apparatus records a song better than a spoken message, but the latter is nevertheless quite clear, and the experts who have been making experiments in co-operation with the inventor declare that it is only a question of time until the telephonograph will repeat a message as clearly as itcan be heard through the most improved telephone. The German Postmaster~General is much interested in this invention, and there are prospects of its adoption in many government telee phene services. Some are withdrawing from the com petition for various reasens, the principal of which is the anticipated amount of work in selecting enough seed from the Standing grain to seed an acre next year, aod also the trouble of keeping the pro- duce of the acre separate from the other crop. We feel like encouraging them to persevere, though it is a little trouble, believing that those who follow out the competition for the three years will be amply rewarded for all their trouble in having by far the best seed ever sown in their locality. Such seed will be sought for by the neighboring farmer at ads vanced prices.

— It is stated that the post of Lord Chief justice of England, in succession to Baron Russell of Killowen, has been offered to Sir Robert Bannatyne Finlay, the libera) upionist member of parliament for Inver~ ness boughs. Sir Robert will doubtless accept. He became solicitor general in 1895, when he was knighted. He grad- uated as a doctor of medicine from Edin- burgh in 1863, but abandoned that pro- fesvioan for the law four years later. He is DOW attorney general.
