thropy ever conceived by man since the beginning of the Christian era, when Our Lord commanded to search out the waifs and strays found in highways and crouched beside hedges, aud compel them to assem- ble to partake of the hospitalities of merey.
The Bernardo effort is the most emphatic instance of practical benevolence since the
founding of Christianity, and this number ot ‘* Day and Night,” of which there are twelve vulumes, is its condensed history and exposition. Dr. Bernardo has _ fur- uished the feast commanded by him (Luke iv, 13,) who was the triend of children, and has literally called to his hospitable board the poor, the maimed, the lame and the bind trem ** the lowest room” of d. grada- tion to “*come up higher.” What does this number vf ** Night and Day” reveal / it reveals the uprising of a great Oasis of refurnn withinthe Sahara ot misery and wretched poverty that is found in the great metropolis ;—it demonstrates that riches have a higher use than puzzling Dives with the problem of how tu dissipate wealth ;— it pulats out how possible it is to love our neighbor according to the Seriptures, and sutisfy the Divine behest ; aud, what is better stil, the figures and facts we have been conuing over distinctly attest to its perpetuity. To imagine not only the per- petuity but the constantly enlarging pro- portions of such a philanthropy is to almost believe in it, as the littie Jeaven that will leaven the world and hit humanity from its dregs. This great work is of special in- terest to Canadian philanthropists.
There is an industriai farm im Manitoba, Thither over tive hundred boys and girls have been sent out tu Canada, which, while it is of incalculable benefit to the selected little cruwd, it is a direct advantage to the Dominion, for it has been proved conciu- sively that a large majority of the children rescued from present poverty and prospec- live crime are responsive to Christian cul- ture, and capable of honest development. So far as Canada is concerned, the last chipment to our shores for transfer to the Miasittoba Home was made at the close of last uuuth (Septeaber), whea one hundred inmates of Dr. Bernardo’s village home would be for:sarded by the Parsian, in charge of a lady specialiy appuinted (Miss Joyce) to take care ofthe little company; and as tunds come in ty accelerate this good aud huwane service, those who contrilute toit of their abundance cannot fail to share its bessing. The annual winter sale ior the present year wili demonstrate the extraurdinary interest in, and appreciativn of, the life-work of Dr. Bernardo. The superfluities of the rich are flowing towards this goal of merey inastream. Ox such there is a list of valuable jewels and works ot art, not yet cunverted tv money, that range from one to a thousand dollars each, and of these there are 3,565 catalogued,
The money donations this year have reached the large sum of half # mulion dvilars; and when it is considered that this flood tide of golden sympathy has borne on its breast sweet messages of love and faith from ali the donors, can it be a matter of doubt that a new era of reform is at hand for straight- ening the crooked inheritances that through crime, upon the friendiess children of criminals, and that augeis of merey are comimissioued to still the waves of juvenile destitation with the oil of joy, and g.adness aud redeenting grace, or, can it be doubted, that some divine purpose underiies this work of Faiti and labor of Love? A volgutary Industriai Home, unique in its character, accommodating 200 youths of 14 and over; testing their characters, and if they are approved, sending them forth to Canada, after six or eight months’ residence, and instruction in wood chopping, carpentry and other useful employments, preparatory tu emigration.
5. A large and beautiful institution con- sisting of forty-nine detached cottages, ac- commodating one thousand girls and training them to domestic services at liford, Essex.

25. Working Lads’ Institute, open nightly anc fitted for recreation and instruction.
26. Young Werkman’s Hotel, where 24 lads are boarded at cost.
27. Free breakfast and dinner table, chiefly for childien attending the free schools. 54,- 438 hot nourishing meals were served durin the four months between December an March.
28. The People’s Mission Church accoim- moda es 3,000 people, with average Sunday attendance of 4,750. Last year’s attendance, all told, numbered 68,178.
29. Evangelical Deaconess Institute, where a lady superintendent and twenty deaconesses are constantly engaged in looking after the social, mental and spiritu:] welfare of the poo.
30. The East End Medical patients of the poorest class. 31. A Mission Hall—w th an average week- ly attendance of 772, carried on chiefly by ladies, in the lowest neighborhoods.
32. A Coffee Palace -— has a large and flourishing trade, but is made the centre of a system of cheap and free meals, during the Witter season.

34. St. Ann’s Gospel Hall, for a children’s charch. It seats 600 and is well patronized. 35. A Cabmen’s Shelter, in a locality where cabs and busses are wont to congregate.

own reluctance to recognize the universal brotherhved as including the off-scouring of nations, that another Daniel has come to rebuke our lukewarmness and disregard, ithough professing to follow Christ, of those ‘who are ready to perish from inherited misery. If there is a Canadian who ob- jects to receive the members of this new reformation upon the soil of Canada, let ‘Dr. Bernardo answer him. At the last ‘great Exeter Hal meeting, presided over by the Right Hon. the Earl of Meath, the /Doctor, in referring to his selection of ‘emigrants for Canada, said to the assembled j thousands :-— ‘* 1 warit.you to remember that we pledge ourselves here, as we have done before, that ywe will never, knowingly, send a boy or girl tv Canada of vicious or criminal life; that we will neversend one child who has not exhibit- ed in the home, indus rial tendencies and good behavior, and shewn some degree of credit from the training bestowed, and that we will never send one who is not sound of body and mind and without hereditary taint.”
Let us all, then, at least bid Dr. Ber- nardo God-speed, though no money values inay accompany our good wishes.
Mission for
The Price of Grain.
Wheat at $1.00a bushel in the North- west Territories isa startling figure, but this is reported from far away Edmonton and is, of cvurse, for local consumption, not for export. Nearer at hand, however in Manitoba, the position is highly satis- factory. At Emerson, on the southerne border of the province, the International reports 90 cents as the ruling price, with occasional higher offer seven up to 95 cents, and this is while No. 1 hard is fetching only 82 cents at Grand Forks,2 Dakota. Actual market figures show that the farmers of Manitoba are obtaining far better prices than the settlers in Dakota and Minnesotta with our anti-Canada press to disparage our country, still pretends that the con- trary isthecase. The reason given for the higher price in Manitoba is also very suggestive, being the active dem+nd of Canadian millers, especially in Manitoba and Keewatin. If the Canadian friends of foreign interests could have had, their way andkept Manitoba, like Dakota, 8° cheap buying place to swell the profits of the Minneapolis millers, whose flour was to be bought back again at the large edvance, these Canadian millers would not now be able to give these satisfactory prices. Can- adian farmers would have lost the increased price and Canada the profits of flouring.— Toronto Empire.
