“A good days sport” is the unanimous verdict of the Charlottetown contingent with respect to the proceedings at Sum- mereide yesterday. ‘lhe programme was a gocd one, and the officers of the day handled it well. There were no delays between eveots, and the day’s sport wa: all over a few minutes after five o’clock. As the train did not leave for over twe hours afterwards the excursionisis had time to *“Jo” Summerside after the “meet.”

Ofcourse the ‘greatest interest of the “meet” was centered in Unsworth and Cannon, tre bicycle heroes, respectively, of Charlottetown and Summerside. There had been much speculai-n as o which wa; the faster, and now the hour of trial was at hand, :

When the Charlottetown boy won the quarter mile by about two yards over Cannon, the Charlottetown contingent cheered until it seemed as if the cheers might be heard at the Capital. But the Summersiders had their innings a little later when Cannon won the half mile race, leading Unsworth by about a yard and a half at the finish. Their cheering made the welkin ring.

The honors were now about even be- tween Unsworth and Cannon. Each had a first and second place to his credit. But Unsworth gave the Charlottetown people » chaace to enthuse again alittle later when he won the one mile race for the champicnship of New Brunswick and P. E. Island, defeating Cannou by about

four yards, and they were not’ slow to take advantage of it. Later on, when

Unsworth captured the five mile race, the cheering was renewel even more vigor- ously than before. ’

Unsworth had now won all the races in which he started except one,and his friends were jubilant. He bad made many friends among the spectators, and there was much disappointment wuen it was ascertained that he would not start inthe two and three mile races. His withdrawal, we understand, was caused by illness.

Cannun captured the two and three mile races, and his admirers cheered him for his good work. Althongh Unsworth was not in these races the Summerside boy did not have things all his own way. Iv the two mile contest Fred Davies put up a splendid race, and at the finish was not more than two yards behind the victor ; and in the three mile Cook was only a yard behind Cannon at the close. Cook and Davies were both enthusiastically cheered for their excellent work.

Prowse, who did not expect to do very

much, nevertheless put up the good racer. Carbonnell rode well and maue the win- ners hustle. In the three mile and novice races his chances of winuing were inter- fered with by accidents. In the first ' mentioned event he was crowded against the fence and thrown from his wheel, and in the second an eathusiastic spectator who accidentally strack him put him off his course. But little things like these do not dampen “Billy,” and he is hopeful of better luck next time. Cannon, too, was ' anfertunate. Io the five mile he was put- ting upa splendid race when he was thrown from bis wheel and lost about two hundred yards. He mounted again and | made a plucky effort to catch up, but failed #todo so. His shoulder was severely | bruised by the fall and he was pretty weil | shaken up generally. Cannon aud Unsworth will probably | meet again at Charlottetown on Labor Day, | and ouce more measure speed, They are both good riders and each has hosts of ad- mirers.

The Charlottetown boys also did _ well in the running races. Cyrus MeMillan and Harry Ritchie, both did good work in the events in which they entered, and McKinnon had things all his own way _in the 880 yards dash. Harry. McKie, another Charlottetown boy and a son of Conductor McKie, also made a splendid showing.

The pleasure of the Charlottetonians at the work doue by their representatives at Summerside was evidenced by the splen- did reception tendered Unsworth, Cook and the o:-hers upon the arrival of the train last night. There were several thousand people at the station, and Une- worth and Cook were escorted to their respective homes by a band ard torch- light procession of wheelmen. The streets along the ronte of the procession were thronged with people, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed,

In the 5-mile bicycle race Unsworih won in 14.214; Wm. Cook second; Prowse third ; Carbonell fourth; Saunders fifth. On the eighth lap Cannon, who had been putting up a good race, fell, and although he tried hard to regain his lost ground failed to do so and finished last.

In the 220 yards hurdle race Coombs won in 30 2-5 sec.; H. McKee, second; Geo. McKelvin third

In broad jumping, Harry McKie, Sum- merside, jamped 9ft 1 fin; Coombs, of St. John, second, 8ft 11 4in; Ritchie, Charlotte- town, third, Sft llin.

In the 220 vards for boys under 14 years, W. Folland, Summerside, won; Sydney Lyle, a close second.

The 2 mile bievcle race was won by Cannon in 5.57 2-5; Davies about two vards behind, S:unders third. Neither Unsworth, Cook or Prowse started in this race.

C. J. McMillan, of Charlottetown, won the 440 yards race in 541-5 sec.; Malcolm, of Moncton, second; Barry MeKoe, third.

The 3 mile bicycle race was won by Cannon, in 9.09; Cook second; Prowse third; Carbonell fourth. Unsworth did not start in this race.
