Prince ward island and Newfoundland was 5.6 per cent higher last year than in 1962, compared with a 6.3 per cent rise in all Canada. But this gap was nar- rower than the previous year when the national increase was 8.2 pe7r cent and the regional “This suggests that as the current business expansion in Canada became deeper and spread to more sectors, the At- lantic provinces felt the effects more strongly. If so, the impli- cation is that a healthy national growth rate is almost a prereq- uisite for regional expansion."

-In some fields, the council's economists say, Atlantic region growth last year was faster than the national rate. They are especially encouraged by the increase in non-agricultural em- ployment.

The, number of non~larm job- holders in the Atlantic prov- inces grew by 3.7 per cent in 1963 compared with a Canadian Increase of 2.9. It rose 2.8 per cent in the first five months of

Other bright spots:

1. The value of Atlantic re- gion manufacturing shipments creased . pe tin 1963. slightly faster than the national rate of 6.9.

2. New capacity in the pulp and paper industry helped boost pulnwood outrut by 17.7 per cent, the greatest jump in re. cent years. compared with a Canadian gain of 4.1 per cent. Newsprint production rose .7 per cent while the national out- put fell by 0.9 per cent.

3. Iron shipments jumped 27.3 per cent 5 new mines came into operation in Labra- dor. Coal production rose 8 per cent from the low level of 1962.

4. Electric pwer generation. reflecting more mining an manufacturing activity, jumped 15.8 per cent. The national gain was about 4 per cent.

Expansion in other sectors was slower than the national average. notably in retail trade an farm cash income. How- ever retail sales were 10.1 per cent hicher than last year in the first five months of 1964.

EXPAND FISH INDUSTRY

Atlantic provinces fishermen. once the mainstay of the coastal economy, continue the rapid expansion of their industry. Fish landings in 1963 rose 10.7 per cent in value compared with a national decline of 2.2 per cent.
