It was not until morning dawned yester- day that the full extent and nature of the calamity became apparent, the slide having | broken all the electric light lamps in the vicinity. One street that winds around the base of the citadel was piled with millions of cubic feet of all sizes, some nearly as large as 4 house.

When daylight dawned the enormous ‘cavity from which the destroying avalanche

had fallen, startled every body. It had ) leit a plain, smooth surface behind it, show- ‘ing that avisible seam or cleft of rock might have been detected long ago had the locality only been subjected to inspec- tion.

In other neighboring masses of overhang- ing rocks large seams also exist; and the men who worked all Thursday night under the shadow of threatening evils, shuddered yesterday at the first sight of the danger which had hung over them.

There is no question that the responsibi- lity for the neglect of the proper precau- tions in regard to the public safety from this property belongs properly to the fed- eral authorities who claim contro] of, and in whom is vested for the time being, all ordenance property of which tke site of the citidel and Dufferin Terrace are im- portant parts. Sir Hector Langevin has recognized this by wiring the chairman of the Municipal Road Committee that the city should engage men to clear away the debris and send in an account to the Gov- ernment.

A Big Deal in Sight.

Derrorr, Sept. 22.

A deal of magnitude is in sight. Some time ago Hiram Wallar, who owns a big distillery in Walkerville, just across the river from Detroit, and has 3,000,000 gallons of whiskey in his warehouses, con- ceived the scheme of getting all the dis- tilleries and whiskey in Canada under one management, and took J. P. Weizer, a large disti!ler, and Gooderam & Worth, of Toronto, in with him. They decided, more than three months age, to send representa- tives to England to confer with English capitalists and forma trust. It was under- stood that each firm was to send represen- tatives to England and men are now in England, accompanied by one of the ablest lawyers in Canada, and it is probable that the deal will be made. It is

heartily welcomed home again. On last Sun- day he gave a highly interesting sketch of his visitto Rome. The rev. gentleman looks well after his long journey.

Mr. Oswald Hornsby, of the Merchants Bank of Halifax, Charlottetown, left this morning to§spend a few weeks holidays in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We wish him a pleasant time.

Mr. W. P. Colwill and family, who moved from Charlottetown to Washington Territory last fall, intending to make their home there, returned on Thursday evening to Charlotte- town, where they pape again settling down. They brought with them the embalmed body of their ten-year-old daughter, who died in June last of spinal meningitis, for interment. —Agriculturist.

Horse Notes.

Two Island horses—Confidence, Jr., and Whistler—captured the thre -ninute race at Moncton last week, and Minnie Grey third in the 2.40 class.

On Tuesday last, says the Summerside Agriculturist, Mr. Wun. T. Ellis, of Bide- ford, shipped to a Mr. McNamee, of Cambridge, Mass., a very fine Black Harry colt, sixteen months old, out of a very nice mare, based on Saladin. This colt isa really handsome individual, and Mr. Ellis informs us that he realized a very good figure for him.

The Moncton Times says: A _ recent visitor to tie Island Province says great interest is felt in the opening of the Char- lottetown Driving Park. Two days grand racing will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of October. There are many fine young horses and foals in and near Charlottetown. Preceptor’s stock is very highly spoken of. One of the finest is Mr. John Cameron’s filly foal from- his mare Yankee Girl, the dam of Blackbird, the little mare that did such good work on the Maritime turf last autumn,
