NEW YORK. (AP)-— The stock market closed lower Wednesday but. it still managed I good meas- ure of recovery from the bottom of the selloff.

That was taken as s demonstra- tion of underlying strength of the market as a whole following Tues- day's sharp break, the worst set.- back in the market in the last four yeans.

The market started lower Wed- nesday with : moderate amount of trading. In the second hour rail- rosds rallied and added to general market betterment. -

Later. however. selling rammed down ali-crafts and steels and car- ried rails and others down along with them. That destroyed what appeared to be a holding operation against the decline.
