Deep Sea Dredging.

PROFESSOR BAIRD SEARCHING FOR THE WIN- TER HOME OF THE MACKEREL.

**On the last cruise of the United States Fish Commission's steamer A|batross,” said Professor Spencer F. Baird to a New York Herald reporter, the other day “thirty new species of fish were brought to the surface. They had never before been seen. We have been dredging recently in very deep water. In fact,’ the trawl has been used in a deeper sea than ever before known. Don't know what a traw! is! Well, it is a drag net attached to an 11-foot beam with runpers 24 feet high at each end; a net 20 feet long is strung along the beam and the apparatus is heavily weighed. On putting it over- board it immediately sinks to the bottom and the drags are made from -half a mile to three miles. These drags are made in what is kuown as the > fathom hole —a depression in the sea bottom of about one hundred and fifty miles in extent, lying in the Gulf of Mexico south of Mar- tha’s Vineyard.” ~

‘“‘Amounted to nuthing except from a/ scientific point of view. The fish, as all fish are that are found at great depth, are small and not edible.’’

‘*But the fish are christened ?”

**Yes, of course. Mr. James E. Bene- dict, the resident naturalist on board the Albatross, preserves the collection of fish discovered on the cruise. Ths fish are then sent to the summer Jaboratory of the United States Fish Coromission at Wood’s Hole, Mass. Some are also forwarded to Professor A. E. Verrill, at Yale College, and some to Washington. At these three places the fish are named.”

‘But you must know,” continued Pro- fessor Baird, ‘‘that this deep dredging is only incidental to the chief object of the cruise. Weare now busily employed in endeavoring to find the winter home of the commun mackerel. Should we be success- ful, it will open .a winter fishing ground in which millions of dollars will be made. Captain Z. L. Tanner, of the Albatross, during the last trip has been endeavoring to trace the mackere} to its winter quarters. At the approach of ccld weather these fish leave the coast. They have been followed to the northern edge of the Gulf Stream, east of Nantucket. There the fisher- men lose them. The exuct spot is called the Fishing rip, about forty miles from shore. The fish disappear in the stormy November weather, leave the surface and sink out of sight. ‘The Albatross, which is now lying at the Navy Yard at Brooklyn, will leave here on Wednesday next. Cap- tain Tanner has instructions to examine the coast between here and Cape Hatteras for the mackerel. “They have never been seen south of the Cape, and it is only a question of time when the commission will discover their home and open one of the largest winter fishing grounds in the world.”

A St. Petersburg*despatch says the se- cond number of a Socialist journal issued by the students of Chestvo declares that despite the miserable condition of the peasantry the Socialist propaganda has not made the progress expected. It says two hundred students have been expelled in a body from the commercial school at Belaja Zerkow, and no reason hgs been assigned for such summary action. Also that stu- dents of noble birth in the Constantinov military school at St. Petersburg have been required to furnish a list of their acquaint- ances, the alleged motive being the tinding of compromising documents in their pos- session.
