The Mennonites of Manitoba do not pros pose to allow the grasshoppers to take their crops without, at least, showing them some opposition. Their plan is to take a light two-wheeled truck, upon the front of which a box, with an open forward end, is erected. tructive pests have been heard of in this |} country, but not to a great extent. On Monday last, Mr. David Murdock, Cariboo, discovered great numbers in hi» wheat field busily devouring the tender wheat. The field in which they made their appearance |is of about two acres in area, and the | worms stayed there till Thursday, when, having eaten all in their way, they dissap~ | peared into a potato field. Where they | came from, or where they dissappeared to, is a mystery. About two-thirds of the wheat was cut down about a foot from the | ground, and the remainder was left stand- ing, but with the grain eatout. Asingular | fact is that they were not seen elsewhere,

While in our North.West Territory and in some of the Western States of the Union grasshoppers have been clearing the crops, some partsof Europe have also suffered severely from a similar scourge, the | country around Galatz, in Roumania, hav | ing, among other places, been ravaged by |loeusts. The hosts were seen to fly over | the town and across the river to the Turk- | ish bank, where they alighted n_ first | passing Galatz the grasshopper cloud was ‘estimated to be from three to four miles wide and about 15 miles long, taking five | hours in flying across. A few days later the

locusts moved down the river, having pretty | well stripped the neighborhood where they ‘first alighted. The inhabitants of the ‘threatened districts are kept hard at work | with pots and pans and other instruments | of noise and discord, endeavouring to pre- ‘vent the insects from alighting on the ‘ground. Many of the locusts fell in the streets of Galatz, and were found to measure from 2} to 3 inches in length.

News ofthe total wreck of the Government schooner La Canadienne, while endeavoring to land a cargo of stores at the humane establish- ment on St. Paul’s Island, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, has been received. The vessel left Halitax on the 11th inst. She was built at Que- bec in 1855, registered 101 tons and was com- manded by Lieut. , M. Brown, R.N., She was lately refitted thoroughly for the buoy service.

Liverpool, August 25. The barque Union, of Arichat, Captain Gerrior, coal laded, bound for New York, went ashore on the ledge off Coffin's Island on the 22nd inst., ina dense fog, and is a total loss. The crew were saved, The vessle is partly insured. The Union registered 311 tons, lewas built at Pictou in 1867, and owned by Capt. Isidore Leblanc, of Arichat.
