The instrumeota! selections, “Irish Aire” by the orchestra, composed of Mr. Heary Dempsey, guitar, Mies Annie B. Fraser, violin, Mi+s Jannic Mcdonali, mandolin, Miss Birdie Moy- nagh, aatoharp, and Miss Ali-e Bryenton, organ, were excel'ent and were heartil: applanded. were heartly encored. The character songs were well taken and elicited great applause. Miss Regina Flood's solo, “Kathleen Aroon,” was well received. Miss Maggie Mc%shon delivered the declamation, “St. Patrick’s Day,” in a very praiseworthy manner. a Rogers, E-q., S’Side, at the request of the chairman, Pres. deat Mullin, recited with good effect, “How Baliste Came Home.” Whil ali the performers acquitted them- selves in such an efficient manver that it is hardly necessary to particularize still, the declamations of Miss Flo Me~ Kenzie and the solos of Master Victor Anderson are worthy of mure than pass- ing notice. Miss McKenzie recited with pleasing effect, “It takes the Ace to beat the Kiog,” and Sanders McGlashan’s Courtsbip.” She was heartily applauded and responded to the encores. Master Anderson sang in excellent style, “Ma- vourneen,” and “Remember Boy You’re Irish.” He was loudly applauded and encored. The selections from the grapho phone, under the management of Mr. J. M. Noonan, were very pleasing.
The accompanists were Mr. Dempsey and Misses A. Bryentoo, Birdy Kenny, Florrie Trainor and Miss Anderson Notwithstanding the postponement the entertainment was highly succeseful. It ig needless to say that its success is due principally to the untiring zeal of Mr. Geo. R. McMahon, the life and spirit of Emerald Branch, B.I. 8., whose gratui- tous labors and eonstant interest in its welfare have tended materially to «levate the society to its present good standing.

TO BLOW UP A MAGAZINE,
Plot Exposed in Time to Avert a Diaster Like thac at
Lonpon, March 18 --The Vienna cor- r-spondent of the Daily Chronicle says he has learned “from an absoluuly trust- worthy source ian St. Petersbury”’ that the recentdisaster at La Goubren, near Toulon, where a magazice was blown up, eausing the loss ef sixty liv.s; wos pariay diabolicial scheme which criginally in- claded the destruction of a magazine at S:. Petersburg.
Karly in the morning of the day on which the La Goubran explosiou occured Gen. Kouropatkio,the Russian Misister of War, receiyed a cipher telegram iwforming him that both magazines would be blown up within twenty-feur hours. Gen. Kouro- pstkin immediately drove tothe maga- zice, roused the guards and hadthe werk- men make a close examination of the magazine and its surroundings. It was reported to h m that the inspection was ex:remely satisfactery. He gave all ibe gaarde and workmen a three days’ tur- lougb and then telepboned for new guards and two compsnies of sappers. ‘The lat~ ter dug a trench ground the magazine to a depth sufficient to insure the cutting of any wires that might bave been piaced to cause an explosion. Cordons of tieops were placed areund the magazine and gen- darmes were posted in all directions,
The inference is that Gen Kouropatkin, by taking these precavtione, averted a disaster similar to that which oscured in France a few hours later.
