YANKEE SMARTNESS.—-It has been remarked that if a Yankee were shipwrecked overnight on an unknown Island, he would be going round the first thing in the morning trying to sell maps to the inhabitants. “ l’ut him," says Lowell, “on Juan Fernandez, and he would make a spellingcbook first and a salt-pan afterwards.” A long. hard warfare with necessity has made him one of the handiest. shiftiest. thriftiest of mortals. In trading he is the very incarnation of the keencst shrewdness. He will be sure to do business under the most adverse circumstances and secure a profit also. This propensity is portrayed in the story of Sam Jones. That worthy. we are told. called at the store of a Mr. Brown. with an egg in his hand, and wanted to “dicker” it for a darning-needle. This done, he asks Mr. Brown if he isn’t going to treat? “ What, on that trade?” “ Certainly; a trade is a trade, big or little.” “ Well, what will you have? “ A glass of wine,” said Jones. The wine was poured out, and Jones remarked that be preferred his wine with an egg in it. The store- keeper handed to him the identical egg which he had just changed for the darning-needle. On breaking it Jones discovered that the egg had two yolks. Says he, " Look here; you must give me another darning needle.”-——erart- erly Review.

Some 35 years ago, a. young man of good family left his home in Northern Ohio, and settled in Meade County, Kentucky. Shortly afterwards he made the acquaintance of a wealthy and highly respectable young lady in a. border town of Indiana. The result of this acquaintance was a happy marriage and a family of five children—all girls. Ten years ago the man died, leaving to his widow and heirs prOperty valued at $50,000. The daughters all married i‘espectably, and up to within the last year had no intimation that a sad piece of romance was coupled with their existance. The spell was broken last winter by the appearance of a young man—hailing from Northern Ohio—who claimed to be the son of the hero of this story, by a wife he had left in Ohio when he went South; and, as the right of his sonship, he claimed the entire estate of $50,000. His claims were so well established that an equitable compromise was made.

Rheumatism, Lumbago, Centracted and Stiff Joints.

Many thousands of martyrs from the above complaints have found life almost unsupportable; yet it‘ llolloway’s Ointment be briskly and perseveringly rubbed upon the parts infected, case may be safely guaranteed, especially if the pores of the skin be previously opened by fomentations with Warm water. The gross humors require expul. sion from the system: it is therefore necessary to have recourse to Holloway’s admirable Pills, which by purifying and strengthening the system, greatly asaist the operation of the Ointment and facilitate and confirm the cure.

Bad Legs, Bad Breasts, and Ulccrations of all kinds.

There is no medicinal preparation in the world which may be so thoroughly relied upon, in the treatment of the above ailments, as Holloway’s Ointment. Nothing can be SO simple or safe as the manner in which it is applied, or its action on the body, both locally and con- stitutionally. The Ointment, rubbed around the part affected, enters the pores just as salt enters meat. It quickly penetrates to the source of the evil and drives it from the system.

Erysipelas and Scrofulous Sores.

In all irritations of the skin, sores, ulcers, burns or scrofulous on- largements of any kind, Holloway’s Ointment presents a. ready and easy means of ours. It manifests a peculiar power in restraining in- flammation, removing stagnation, cooling the heated blood, and check- ing all acrimonious and unhealthy discharge.

Diseases attendant on Childhood.

Diseases incident to early life fall more under the management of the mother than the medical man. Holloway’s Ointment should there- fore be regarded by her as a “ Household Treasure,” as it never fails in bringing out the rash in measles and scarlatina; and for the remo- val of all skin diseases its effect is miraculous. In cases of whooping cough and croup, this invitluahle Ointment should be rubbed twice a day upon the throat and chest, and the youngest invalid Will derive there- from the most soothing relief.
