The UPEI Lady Pan- thers fell just short of win- ning a bronze medal in the CIAU Womens champi- onships. They. lost to the Victoria Vikettes 60-55 in their final game.

Ria Bahadursingh led the Panthers in their final game with 14 points. Also scoring for the Lady Pan- thers were Tracey Bowie 10; Stephanie Smith 10; Susan Knickle 8; Tracy MacEach- ern 7; Nadine Enman 4; Janet Nichols 2.

The game ends a most successful season for UPEI as they won their second AUAA title in a row and fin- ished 4th. Assistant coach Karen Rowell said that the team is “quite satisfied” with their overall performance.

The upset-minded Aca- dia Axemen came to town on the weekend with aspi- rations of taking their semi- final series from number one ranked UPEI. However, they left without the series as UPEI rallied for two victo- ries on the weekend to take their AUAA semi-final series 2 games to 1.

On Saturday the Ax- emen played the Panthers tough for two periods but ran out of gas in the third period as UPEI scored three unan- swered third period en route to a 6-3 win. In the first period Kevin Stower opened the scoring for Acadia on the Powerplay as UPEI’s Wayne MacPhee was in the box for Holding. Kevin Skilliter tied the score with four minutes remaining on a_ hard shot from the point. UPEI out- shot Acadia 17-7. Steffen beat Axemen goalie James Dubberly over his Shoulder only 0:40 into the Period but Dwight Lucas tied the score at 5:48 of the pe- tiod. Dave Shellington and Ross Kenny traded late third Period goals. UPEI outshot Acadia 19-10 in the period.

Ria Bahadursingh and Tracy MacEachern will not be back with the Lady Pan- thers next year and will be missed. Both Janet Nichols and Tracey Bowie have one year of eligibility remaining.

The Panthers defeated the University of Toronto 66-59 in their first game and then lost in the semi- final 73-60. The Lady Pan- thers were unable to stay with Calgary’s bigger play- ers as Tracy MacEachern was forced to sit out the game with a foot injury.

They then were able to stay with Victoria for most of the game but ran into foul trouble in the second half and were unable to catch up.

Lady Panthers return with 4th place

All in all this has been the most successful season for a UPEI Basketball team ever and I think the Lady Panthers should be congrat- ulated on a great season.

_UPEI eliminates Acadia

In the third period UPEI ex- ploded, breaking a 3-3 tie and shelling Acadia goalie Dubberly with 20 shots and scoring three times. All this scoring was much to the de- light of the full house at the Forum. Randy Mut- tert, Jerry Flemming, and Dave Shellington all scored in the third period. For Shellington it was his sec- ond goal in the game. When Flemming scored the Forum exploded as he slipped a puck past Dubberly on a breakaway. Saturday’s game

was Flemming’s first game back since cracking his ribs against Mount Allison last Saturday. UPEI outshot Acadia 36-22 in the game. Jerry Flemming was named player of the game for UPEI.

As in Saturday’s game the chippyness continued as referee Bob LeBlanc called a lot of penalties early in the game. The Panthers came out flying on Sunday taking a 3-1 lead after the first period. Randy Muttart knocked in a Dave Shellington rebound and Brent Thompson blasted

a shot past Dubberly for an early 2-0 Panther lead. A powerplay goal by Steve Hedington pulled the Axe- men within one before the end of the period. UPEI out- shot Acadia 10-4.

In the second period Jeff Steffen and Steve Fulton scored within three minutes of the start of the period to give UPEI a 4-1 lead. Rob MacInnis scored for Acadia with four minutes left to pull Acadia within two goals. Shots on goal in the period were 7-7. Randy Muttart closed out the scoring for the game with his second goal of the game at 14:09. UPEI won the game 5-2 and elim- inated Acadia from further advancing in playoff action. UPEI outshot 29-16 in the game.

With the victory UPEI moves on to play the Uni- versity of Moncton Blue Ea- gles in the AUAA Final Play- off series. Moncton advanced with a 4-3 overtime victory over StFX on Sunday. The series began last night in Moncton and returns to the Charlottetown Forum for a game Saturday and Sunday if necessary.
