Learning to Howl.

Ic is an old Spanish proverb, we believe, ‘** He who lives with wolves will soon learn to howl.” He who lives with the fauits of his friends, and counts them over and soits them, weighs tham and measures them, will soon have equally grave ones of his own, which his friends will be sure to see, and which he will be positively unable to cure.

There is nothing that so deteriorates charact+r as this undue looking after faults and blemishes in o' hers while we are blind tu our own. We may abhor meanness and stinginess in our neighbor, and be able to give a hundred reasons why he should give away mvre in chaiity, and see a thousand little thiogs indicating his smallness of soul aud at the same time we may be so engross- ed with one phase of meanness in hin as tu forget another phase of mesnness in our- selves,

We may abhor another untruth so vehe- meutly ia some one else that we shall for- g2t to hate impurity in ourselves. We may despise our neighbor for his sharpaess and trickery, and spread over our own slackness and idieness and shiftlessness the coverlet of—‘* Thank God, I’m not a sharper!” The idle, thrifcless man can never reform the overshrewl speculator; the impure min can never lift the unteuthful man out of the bog; the gozsiper is not fit to cure the miser of his seltishness.
