FODDER CORN,

In the cultivation of the Indian corn crop, a few points are important. ‘They are stil either unknown or ovcrlooked by many farmers. A corn crop should get a good start, ‘The land should be tully manured near the surface, or the corn should be planted ina seed bed prepared by the ploughing under of sod or clover.

If the land be toul with weeds cr grassy, a surface cultivation at two in tervals of ten days each, early in the Ss, ring will give the weeds a chance to start, when they will be destroyed by the tillage preparatery to the planting ef the corn. the field clean during the summer will be very much lessened by such a treat- ment in the spring. A variety of corn should be selected which will arrive at the glazing stage ot growth before the usual period of frost in the autumn.

It should oe planted in rows or hills not less than three feet apart. If in rows, it should be planted so thin that stalks will not be closer than three to the foot in each row; if in hills, from four to six stalks per hill. It the seed be sound and on a high percentage of vitality, about twenty pounds of seed per acre is enough.

It is usually a good plan to harrow the corn crop with iight harrows when the plants are about four inches above ground. ‘That is particularly benefical if the ground is all crusted, as after arain. But the ground should be dry enough to be in good working tilth be fore the harrowing is done. ‘Ihe culti- vation should be frequent and always shallow. ‘The roots of the corn plant grow out sideways ; where the cultiva— tion cuts these off, great injury to the crop is done.

The best stage at which tocut the corn crop for ensilage, is when the kernels in the ears are of full size, but before they begin to harden. ‘That is usually the stage when the lower leaves of the corn stalk become yellow and withered. At that time the plants will contain the largest quantity of digestible matter, and will be in their best condition for preservation. ‘The feeding value per acre is greatest when the crop is nearly mature but not ripe.

A SILO.

A silo is a convenience which every dairy farmer should have. It need not be an expensive structure. It requires to be strong ¢nough to hold corn fodder when cut into lengths of from one-half to one inch. It should be fairly close, so as to exclude the air after the ensilage has settled.

The main features are strength to resist the outward pressure of its con— tents, exclusion of air by the construc- tion of the sides, anda fair depth of holding capacity, in order te permit the ensilage to settle into a compact mass, Sufficient strength of sides can be ob- tained in most silos by the use cf 2x10 Or 2x12-inch studs, placed from 18 inches to 2 feet apart. A clay or earthen floor is most ecenomical, and as good as any that can be put in. The inside of the walls of the silo may be finished by a single lining of lumber nailed to the studs horizontally. The lumber should be tongued and groov~ ed and pressed on the inside. If each alternative board be allowed to extend at the corners, so as t> make a lock-~ joimt, that will give additional strength to the structure. The corners of the silo, on the inside, should be filled by
