_It is alleged by the Mouvement Catho- ique, which is supposed by some to reflect the personal opinions of Mgr. Lafieche and

the clergy of that diucese, that the follow- | ‘ing propositions have been made to Mgr. |

Langevin with the object of settling the ' Manitoba School question :

1. Appointment of Mgr. Langevin or a resentative of the Archbixhop’s choice a member of the Advisory Board.

2. An inspector of French, and an assist- of need, must be a Catholic

schools of the province. 94. Permission to teach from 1898 for the present teachers in the French schools and other competent pervons upon the recommendation of the French Inspector.

4 Normal course for ten weeks for the prepuration of teachers of French schools under the direction of teachers named by the Department of Public T[nstruetion. These teachers are «iso to be acceptable to Mgr. Langevin. The French and Catho~ lic inspector will be ore of these teachers, avd the name of Abbe Cherrier has been ruggested. This course will be given in an establishment fixed upon by common accord, St. Boniface Coilege and St. Mery’s Academy being suggested.

5 Representation accorted tothe French echool authorities on the Board of Exam- inere, and it is understoodthat these ex~ aminers will hold the examinations in the establishments where the normal course | is given.

6. A meeting of tle sckoolbook com- mission of the consulting board, to which will be joined a representative of St. Booi- face College, in the University Council, will examine the class books that are to be published by the consulting toard and all thet is objectionable to Catholics will be elirminated.

7. The same commiss‘on and the two representatives of the Sc. Boniface College will authorize a seriesof &rench and Eng- lish reading booke (Montpetit suggested ) but it is understood that, in order to pre- pare the French scholars to follow the bilingual course, French tooks mey be used for the study of French.

8. The same commission wil] examine the histories of Canada and England, as well as geographies, to adopt them in order tothe use of the French schools. It is underetood that no historical or geographi- cal worke will be approved if it is not ac-~ ceptable to Catholics.

It is understood no beok will be author- ized if it contains anything offensive to Catholics, that the French language will be taught, and the Freach Grammar used. 9, Toe three Catholic schools of Winni peg will be leased by the Board and con- sidered as public schools.

| BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS.

Mr. J. J. McKinnon’s New Double House on Brighton Road.

The honse that has been built by Mr. J.J. McKionon ranks with the finest double structures erected in Charlottetown for some time. The house is located on Brighton od. Hh minutes walk of Victoria Park,and com mands.a full view of the herhbor.

The building has a frontage of 53 feet and runs back 50 feet. The front halls are lixl5 feet andare fitted with handsome stairways and bardwood floors. There are three rooms the

tenement besides the kitchen and pantry. The parlor is 13x16 feet and the eitting room 13x14. The sitting room has a handsome slate mantel and is connected with the parlor by a large archway. The

breakfast room 10x13 feet, and the kitchen 14x15.

On the second floor there are four large bedrooms anda bath-room. There is a § door opeaing io the balcony, which is 7x12 feet. In the attic there are two large bedrooms and a Jumber room.

A feature of the house that mu-t he greatly appreciated by housekeepers are the large closets off the bedrooms and the china closet off the breakfast room. Th ere is also a frost-proof cellar,-seven feet deep.

The house is heated throughout by bot

water, the Baffalo boiler and Staff ord radiators being used. The bath-room is fitted with marble topped basin and ateel- clad tub. The house is lighted by electricity, and is plastered with celenite cement. The work throughout is of the best des- cription, and the contractors, Meesrs Park~ man & Crabbe, are deserving of the great- est credit.

Now that so many handsome houses are being erected in the vicinity of Brighton, and so radical a change has been made in the topography of that section of the city, it is to be hoped tbat the City Cononcil will no lovger hesitate about doing something in the way of improviog the conditions iv tae vicinity of Gov- ernment Pond. Itis rumored that the present bridge wear the old tannery is to be replaced by one of stone in the near tuture, and it is hoped that the pond will be dredged and made more beautiful to the eye than it has been in the past. There are some other improvements that might be referred to im this connection but they | have been so ofted pointed out by the press that it is needless togo oyer them again.

The bui'ding craze seems to have taken the place of tne Klondike fever here at present. Mr Baroey Creamer, of Kast Point, is in town making arrangements for the building of five dweiling houses for parties here for which he has contracted. Two of theee he has sub-contracted to Mr Ambrose Hughes and we have no doubt that under his ¢kil‘ul sa.e vision they, when completed, will do much to uphold his already well earned reputation as 4 skilful] aod ingenious builder.
