AN alarming sickness, said to be the black fever, is reported prevelant at Sillery Cove. Quebec, which seems to deal very summarily with its victims. Two people—Mrs. Jack Hagens and her servant girl—are reported to have died from it within an_hour after taking ill, and were buried on 'Fhursday, at the ehnrch of St. Columba.

PcTaTOES FoR Ngzp.—We were shown on Tthesday at arch’d MeNeill’s Auction Room a very fine looking sample of potatoes from the farm of Alex, Smith, Esq., Pownal, Lot 49, in the spring of 1877 Mr. Smith received from his son, at Vancouver Island, British Colum- bia, 4 ibs of these potatoes which he planted, the ;r duct of which he again planted in the spring of 1878, from which ke has had a yield this fall of about 1,500 bushels which are now offered for seed. This potato is ealled the **Royal Adelaide,” is white, entirely free from disease or rot, is of choice cooking qual- ity aad very productive, as shown by the above statement. Mr. Smith has shipped 100 boxes of the ‘‘ Royal Adelaide” to Liverpool, England, by the *‘Prince Edward,” feeling contident that they will meet with ready and remunerative sale in the home market.

A recent issue of the ‘* Rovai Gazette” of that colony contains the following :—* By public notice in to-day’s ‘*Gazette” it will be seen that a requisition has been presented to the Stipendiary Magistrate at Carbonear, from over one-iifth of the régistered electors of the district of Bay-de-Verds, requiring that a vote may be taken to determine whether two- thirds of the qualified electcrs polled are in favor of a proclamation being i+ uel prohib t ing the sale of intoxicating liquors in that dis- trict; and that his Execilency the Governor has directed that polis for deciding the ques- tion shall be taken in the said- District ou the 6th January next.”

Toronto, Dec. 8. Hanlan goes to New York this week to interview Mr. Blaikie,. regarding the dis- posal of the $6,000 prize. He wishes no further transaction with Courtney, direct or indirect. He will prebably go to England in the spring. JNITED STATES. New Yorx, Dec. 8. Aspinwall advices detail the damage by a severe storm which began on November 20th and lasted five days. All the sailing vessels in the harbor were lost except one ; all the wharves sufiered severely, The damage exceeded that of any previous
storm. All the steamers ran ont to sea for safety. The railway track from Aspinwall
to Panama was submerged several feet in tmany places, and houses and hamlets along the route were inundated.

Hartrrorp, Conn.
News has been received here of the death in Paris, November 30, of Yah Shu Fung, Secretary of the Chinese Minister Chind au Pin, from 1873 to 1876. He was attached to the Chinese educational commission, re- siding in this city. He returned to China and came back with the Chinese Embassy a year ago last August, and went to Madrid with the Chinese embassy last spring. There his health failed,and he went to Paris for medical aid. He was 55 years old.

The steamer City of Tokio arrived from Hong Kong via Yokohama, brings advices to Nov. 13th. Extrétordinary diplomatic ruinors are prevailing there which require notice to give assurance thatno unusual negotiations are progressing and no unex- pected alliances contemplated. These ruimsrs peint to Russian efforts to secure co-operation in Central Asia on the basis of promising support to China against Japan on the event of future difficulties; also to German arrangements for unprecedented influence over the Chinese external policy, secured by the ingenuity of the présent Russian envoy. As these stories will doubtless reach America and Europe, it is desirable to state that there is no shadow of a real change in Chinese relations.

A Castlereagh (Dublin) despatch to the Herald says.the meeting yesterday was a gathering of about 5,000 vigorous looking nen. During Parnell’s speech a rush was made to sweep off the Government report- ers, bat twenty constables who surrounded them, brought their guns to bear, and the crowd feli back. Parnell then had the re- porters bronght to the stand and guaranteed their safety, if the constable were wiith- drawn, which was done; bntthe mob was dissatisfied. Patrick Eagan made a speech in which he said the rents paid did not come from the soil but came from America.
