The Direct United States Cable Co. will apply next session for an act to extend its corporate character to the Dominion, to en- able it to perfect cable communication with Great Britain and the Dominion, and to revoke the letters patent of the Dominion issued on the 17th May, 1875, incorporat- ing the Direct United States Cable Co., limnited.

The Supreme Court meets on Tuesday, ani all the Judges are now in the city. Among the cases in which judgment will probably be given is the celebrated Great Seal case of Nova Scotia. Judgment will be given almost immediately in the Mont- goumery election case. The Bellechasse election appears in precisely the same posi- tion. There ave also elsetion appeals from South Ontario.

Mrs. Margaret Smith was yesterday awarded $2,000 damages for injuries sus tained by being thrown out of a steamer on a voyage to this country in 1877. She claimed that.the surgeon of the ship aban- doned her in a fainting condition and she was tossed about ona wet, filthy floor for an hour by she relling of the ship.

New York, Oct. 25.

James Sullivan entered the station of the Elevated Railway this afternoon, purchased a ticket, walked out on the platform, drew a knife, deliberately cit his own throat and jumped from the platform into the street below. Though still alive he is dangerously injured.

A despatch to the Interior Department, mentions the surrender by the Ute Indians of the women and children captured by them at the time the Agent Meeker was killed. The tenor of the news from the special Agent who secured the surrender of: the white captives, is such that tie Indian bureau have reason to hope that further hostilities may be averted.

New Yor, Oct. 25.

Further details of the burning of the steamer Nuena Pajaro state that the en- gineers were suffocated to death at their engines. ‘The heat of the fire was extreme and when it reached the petroleum and other inflammable material of which the cargo consisted, a. tremor seemed to go through the entire length of the main deck a3 if the vessel was bursting asunder from the terrible pressure. The men were dread- fully burned as they stood at the pumps and now all abandoned them in the wildest terror and rushed for the boats, which swamped as fast as lowered. The sea was black with huinan beings who jumped over: board to escape the flames ; but, with a few others saved by clinging . to a piece of the vessel, the steamer burned to the water and sunk.

Details of the horrors of the flood at Murcia, Spain, are harrowing, but are re- lieved by accounts of the heroism of those who saved hundreds from drowning in their houses. At Alicante also, the com- mercial port of Valencia, the whole plain was covered with raging waters which form a lake nearly thirty miles in extent. The inundation passed over the enormous stone table in which Alicante is inlaid, streamed | through its arches, its half dark piazas and narrow streets, and wrought havoc only second to that ‘which ravaged the plain of Murcia. The amount of damage is fifty million francs! Itis feared the loss of life / will exceed 3,000,

TRADE IN HALIFAX.

The fish exports to the West Indies last week were 1,355 tierces, 2,754 drums, 185 half-boxes dry ; 879 bbls., 15 half-bbls. pickled fish. The previous week there were 513 tierces, 2,946 drams, 1,110 boxes, 816 half-boxes dry ; 717 bbls , 26 half-bbls. pickled fish.

Sixty-four and a half pounds i the weight per bushel of wheat of the red fern sort, raised this season in one locality in Manitoba. What do our farmers think of that.

BOSTON MAi.KET ON oct. 24,

Potatoes—There is rather a short supply of potatoes at the roads, and Northenn Rose are firm at 45 to 47 cents per bushel) and Eastern are selling at 50 to 55 gent. Sweet potatoes are firm at $2 per barrel. Onions range from $2.25 to 2.50 per barrel.

Oats—There is a limited demant, but the market is firm at prices ranging from 45 to 51 cents for the various grades of oats, including extra at the latter figure.

Butter—There is an advance in the finer grades of butter, and 25 to 26 is the market for fine fall-made New York and Vermont dairy, and some few sales have been made a trifle above these figures. Straight dairies, including fall ends, are firm at 21 to 23 cents, and good ones at 19 to 20 cents. The receipts of Westerté but- ter are taken at 16 to 19 for ladle packed, and 21 to 24 cents for freshly-made dhiry- packed.

Eggs—The market was firm to-day at 20 to 21 cents per dozen for Northern, P. E. Island and Eastern, and 1% to 20 for Western.

The Acton Silver Mining Company has reorganized. The company is iocated in Acton, Maine, has a capital of $500,000 divided into shares at a dollar a shafe. It is believed that the conditions under'which silver is found in Maine exist in Charlotte County, N. B.
