And this heat is not of the same degree in all trees. The heat of the maple is not that of the ash, nor is the heat of the ozk like that of the pine. Not only does this heat vary in different clarses of trees, but it varies in individuals: for as one animal differs from another of the same size and weight and breed, so one tree will differ frou: another of the same dimensicn, species and general appearance. And, as one person is warmor-blooded than another, 80
ONE TREE IS WARMER THAN ANOTHER. And this is easily tested by the thermo- meter, so that it is .ot a matter of specula- tion a all. For, if you are incredulous, and have a love of knowledge, you can take an anger into the woods with you next summer and easily prove this to be a_ fact yourself. And if you leave yoar gun and rod behind, or make them only of second- ary value, while the real and valuable re- sult of your outing is increase of health and knowledge, and take your eyes and ears and & microscope into the woods with you, you will tind out a good many other facts which you will not read of in books. And you will find that these who write books either know very little or have devided to tell you very little that is really worth knowing. If you would know what honey is, find a wild bee’s comb and don’t try your sample corked up in asma!l dottle at the corner grocery.
In view of what has been here set down regarding trees and their uses, the destruc- tion of our remaining forests by the axes of selfish greed and the fires of ignorant care- lessness is seen to be a blow aimed at the health and well being of the people at large. It is the first duty of the American people to grow tress now—not do destroy them. The custodianship of our remaining forests should be a part of our national policy. Every man who has luogs and breathes 1s vitally interested in their preservation. The absence of trees means the drying up of brooks, the silencing of the rivulets, the shrinkage of ponds and rivers, and the ab- sence of needed moisture and invigorating purity from the air we inhale. It means, furthermore, achange of climate so vast and radical that no man of our generation is wise enough to foresee the extent of it or the tremendous changes in human condi- tions that it may import. Water and air in abundance and purity this country must have, and these the millons of the future will not have unless the trees on this con- tinent are allowwed to stand and multiply.
