THE GOVERNMENTS’S FIRM STAND.

The feeling on the Riel question among the Frevch Canadians, as manifested by the newspapers and public meetings is un- doubtedly very bitter. The French papers all attack the Government for the ex- ecution, and party lines seem obliterated. An agitation is on foot to bring Riel’a body here for burial. Riel’s widow gives consent to this arrangement.

Riel’s execution has set on foot a decided agitation in Quebec for annexation to the United States. However, the opinion is that affairs will soon quiet down. The Grits are making the most of the Govern- ment’s embarrassment. It is said Sir John has received mavy telegrams and letters from formér opponents. congratulating him on the firm stand takon by the Govern- ment.

The War in Bulgaria. Lonpon, Nov. 18.

Thirty thousand Servians were engaged in to-day’s fighting at Siivenitza.

A despatch from Belgrade says that Queen Natie has received a telegram from Baitchar, announcing the fall of Widdin. The same despatch says a portion of Mere- vas division, after a severe fight, captured Roadmier, Four hundred prisoners arrived at Belgrade from the front.

The Bulgarians, after desperate fighting, carried every one of the Servian pusitions which were menscing Slivnitza. Prince Alexander led the Bulgarian columps in person.

lt is reported that the | urkish army corps has concentrated at Kumanoo, at the junction of Nisea and Sofia roads, and has thrown out outposts on the Servian and Bulgarian frontiers.

An official despatch reiative tothe en- gagements between Servians aud Bulgarians saya: After heavy fighting Prince Alexander was forced to rétreat. Both sides lost heavily.

Lonvon, Nov. 19.

The Daily News has a despatch from Sofia confirming the report of the Bul- garians victory. The Servians lost 10 guns and 366 horse, and 3,000 men killed or wounded.

The Daily Telegraph says it is almost certain that Greece will go to war.

The Prefect of Tru announces that the Servian inhabitants of that place, who took refuge in Servia, are at liberty to return.

It is reported that Prince Alexander hes been wounded.

The Dirretto of Rome says Austria is dis- posed to concede territory ratifications to Italy in return for Ltaly’s changes in the political constitution of the Balkan’s terri- tory.
