S., correspondent of the Halifax Herald reports that Newton Lee and his stallion All Right start for Prince Edward Is'and on the 15th, and adds that Mr. Lee re- ceived an offer of $3,000 for his horse from Mr Leaman, but declined it. A SPECIAL meeting of the Fire Depart- ment was held last evening. The principal business transacted was the appointing of a successor to Mr. J. A. Rowe, as engineer of Silsby No. 7. A requisition signed by the members of the Silsby Company and a large number of influential citizens praying that Mr. Matthew Murphy, who for many

years past has been the fireman, should succeed Mr. Rowe as engineer was received. Some discussion ensued

and the following resolution, moved by Capt. F. H. Beer and seconded by Mr.Jcho McPhail, was put and carried :—

Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed to act with the Chief Engineer to enquire as to competency of Mr. Murphy to take charge of the Silsby engine as engineer, the said committee to report at a meeting of the Board to be called for that purpose.

Tue Terepnone.—-We understand that telephone poles have beer placed-along the railway east of Charlottetown with the view of having the line extended at an early day, to Georgetownand Souris. It should also be extended to East Point. There is as yet no signal station in P. E. Island. East Point is a suitable place to put one. The Government is determined to protect our fisheries against poachers of every description and class, and in doing so signal stations along our coast will be found necessary. One should be erected at North Cape, another at Cape Bear, near Murray Harbor, and another at East Point. In connection therewith, the telephone cou!d be utilized. Ifthe Government at Ottawa would grant a small subsidy, we presume the Telephone Co, here would undertake the erection of a line tothe points named. And apart from the signal service altogether we hope to see a telephone line extended to many parts of the {sland that are w.thout telephone accommodation, euch as New Londen, Rustico, Dundas, andother places we could name.

Tue annual meeting of St, James’ Church was hel? on the [2th inst. The Pastor, the Rev. James Carruthers, opened the meeting, and Mr. J. W. Morrison was elected chair- man. The report of the session was then real. It expressed gratitude to God for the many mercies vouchsafed to the congregation during the year, and mention was alzo made to the death of the late Dr. J, Mackieson, one to their number, who had been identified with the congregation since its inception. Forty- one members had been added during the year, The Sabbath Sehool was doing good work, there being an incvease of 67 scholars. Seven- teen were admitted from the Sunday Schoo! to the membership of the Church. Rev. D. Me- Neill read the report of the Ladies’ Aid Society, showing the work done ; that they had been able materially to aid the Trustees, and still have a balance of $505.79 to meet bonds due next year. Mr J, A, Lawson read the report of the Young Peoples’ Society, which was most gratifying, and which re- ported a balance over expenditure of $104. The Benevolent Society reported that the sum of $104 was received, which aided the committee in relieving distress. The treasurers of these different de- partments of work reported as fol'ows;— Schemes, $221.00; sebbath school $100. 14; ladies aid, $505.79; benevolent societies, $104.14; young peoples’; $104.93 ; total $1036.00. The trustees report this year to be one of the most successful in the history of the church. The income from all sources, includ- ing subscriptions and bazar last spring, was $4361.00 which met all expenditure, and left a balance of $33.00 ‘This, with the sum mentioned above making a total of $5397, having passed through the hands of the different treasurers during the year, the con- gregation expressed its thankfulness to Almighty God by singing the doxology. After the uenal vote of thanks to the ladies, the choir,etc., the congregation granted the pastor three months leave of absence, and one of the happiest and most successful meetings was brought to a close with the benediction.

The motion was seconded by Mr. Rylands (Lib- eral) who was loudly cheered.

Lord Salisbury moved that a petition em- bodying the sentiment of the meeting be presented to Parliament. He said that the Premier’s wand could not efface the effects of the centuries of confliet and exaspera- tion. The future government of Ireland would not involve unmanageable difficulties if the people of England remained true to the Empire. The motions introduced by Lords Hartington and Salisbury were un- animously carried.

The House met at 3 p. m. Dr. Hickey moved that the Act relating to druggists (from the Senate) be taken up to-morrow.

In answer to a question, Chapleau said that the Government had received no com- munication from the Imperial Government in relation to the visit of Measrs. Sullivan and Ferguson, members of the P. E. Island Government, to London, in relation to the non-fulfilment of the Terms of Union.

Vail moved for a return of correspondence respecting the flag treaty between Spain and the United States, and complained that the Government had done nothing to secure for Canada privileges similar to those obtaiued by the United States.

Stairs pointed out that England had no- thing to give in return for concessions from Spain, and therefore could not secure what the United States had secured under a dif- ferent fiscal policy.

After some further statements the motion was carried.

Fatal Cyclone.

Minnzaronis, Minn., April 14,

Reports have been received this evening, of a tertible cyclone at St. Cloud, Minn., this afternoon, in which it is reported 400 persons were killed, 75 injured and half the town laid waste. It is reported that Sauk Rapids also suffered. Mayor Ames and half a dozen physicians are just leaving on a special train for St. Cloud in answer to messages for assistance.

LATER. Sr. Pavn, Minn., April 14. The cyclone, it is reported, cut a path 600 feet wide through the city of St. Cloud, destroying 200 or 300 houses, and 100 per- sons were killed. It is said that 30 persons

were killed at Sauk Rapids, and that in both places many hundreds were wounded.

Earl Granville yesterday sent a cable to Lord Lansdowne, in which the Secretary for the Colonies says that “‘ Her Majesty de:ires him to express her hope that Sir John Macdonald’s health continues to im- prove.” Thetelegram was communicated to-day to Sir John, who was deeply affected by this evidence of Her Majesty's thought- fulness and kind remembrance at a time like the present crisis in the English Parlia- ment. Sir John tu-day drove round the Parliamentary grounds looking bright aad speaking cheerily.

A cable despatch received here says :— ‘* The subscription list for twenty million dollars, Canadian Pacific bonds, was closed yesterday afternoon.’ This was quite un- expected, it being one day earlier than st first announced. Itis reported on change that the applications reached thirty mil- lion dollars.
