South was tempted at this point to try for a double finesse in spades. because he would apparent- lv need three spadr: tricks, with three diamonds. four hearts and two clubs, to round out the con- tract. On second thought, however, he decided that it was more remote to find the king and jack of spad- es in East's hand than to play for a squeeze. So he took the single spade finesse. to the queen, and when it held he cashed the spade ace and ran his hearts, dis- carding three clubs from dummy.

This sequence 0! plays was too much for West. Forced to hold four dzamonds so that when the king was overtaken the fourth diamond in dummy would not be good, he had to give up two clubs. and South's third club became the lul- tililng trick.

i Yowier had been hunting all night without success. It happens that way sometimes. Many or the Green Meadow and Green Forest iolk out their meals regularly, just as boys and girls do. But there are some of the iolk in fur and Iieathers who do not know what it 1la to have regular meals. They are the ones who live by. hunting others. They are the meat-eaters. They can have a meal only when they catch it. Yowler the Bobcat ii: one at these.

It was a scene pretty enough to make any one draw a long breath and hold it.

But Yowier didnt see the beauty l

of that lovely scene. No. sir, he didn't see that at all. It wasn't this that made him draw a long in-eath. He saw only a wonderful dinner it he could catch one of those lawns. He flattened himself on the ground and began to crawl toward that lovely pool. He took the ut- most care to keep under cover. He moved ever so slowly. so slowly. that had you been where you could see him you might have thought he didn't move at all. As Yowler saw it, there was just one thing wrong with that lovely scene. It was the fact that those young tawns were on the other side of the pool.

However, they might come across. or one of them might. One was all he could hope to catch any- way. The thing for him to do now was to rind a place where he could be out of sight, yet within leaping distance should one of those young deer come across the pool. Not for an instant did he take his eyes from them as he inched over the ground. They seemed to be alone. and Yowler was glad of that. At last he reached the last bit of cover
