Mr. Swabey lias been pleased to refer. We do, however, sincerely hope that the members of this community can so far appreciate fair play, as not to condemn an individual before he has been fairly tried. Understanding that the article on the State Trials has given rise to some un- easiness amongst several of our frjends, we beg they will suspend their judgment until we shall have given such an explanation of our views as appears to have “become necessary, and as the subject may admit of. As for the howl about sedition, treason, rebellion, and so forth, set up by some cowardly ruffian who has sneaked into the columns of the Islander under a ficti- ‘tious name, we need only say, that we have been too long accustomed to that sort of hubbub to regard it with ‘any thing more than a smile of contempt.

Hrs Excertency Sir Donatp anv Lavy Camprery entertained a large Party witha Ball and Supper at Go- vernment House on Thursday evening last. Dancing was kept up with much spirit until nearly four o’clock, when the company returned to their homes, evidently mucna delighted with the enjoyments of the night, and with the frank and cordial reception given by their en- tertainers.

Mr. D. Mactean.—This gentleman—having, we suppose, finished his potato-digging—has taken com- passion on the “ man of straw,” and given him another bit of original matter for his paper. Although many of our readers have informed us lately, that in the country it 1s considered a matter of doubtful respectability even to notice any thing written by such a person as Mr. Maclean, yet, when we have no other employment for our time, we shell shew that Duncan Maclean has ful- ly qualified himself to exclaim with old Jack Falstaff— * Lord, Lord, how we old men are given to lying !”

AxnuAL Proveninc Marcu.—The Annual Ploughing Match, under the direction of the Royal Agricultural Society, came off on Thursday the 19th instant, at‘ Faleon Wood,’ the seat of the late John Grubb, Esq. in the Royalty of Charlotte- town. ‘[here were a good number of Farmers on the ground ; oat we regret to say that, although the day was fine, and the

site selected for the ploughing match, was within a short dis-|

tance of the town, there were not one dozen persons from ‘harlottetown tobe seen on the gronnd. The following are tie vames of the successful competitors ; First prize, 40s. to Chester Woolner, of Rustico. ~ecoud do. 30s. to Denzic Moorside, North River. No imported Stock to compete for Premiums.

No prize to be awarded, unless inthe opinion of the Judges there be sufficient competition.

The Judges will be named on the Show day, and will com- mence their inspection at12o0’clock; and any person having Stock competing for a Premium, who may interfere with the Judges, during their inspection, will not be entitled to any such Premium.

Competition open to all; but persons receiving a Premium, to become a member of the Society for the ensuing year.

In order to afford accommodation for persons bringing Stock for competition across Montague and Cardigan Rivers, a large Flat or Scow will be provided, worked by two men, to ferry. free of charge, such Stock and a person attending them, com- ing and returning on the day of the Fair.
