How Mendelssohn Made Music.

Mendelssohn delighted in the open air and beautiful scenery. When he was twenty, he stayed for some time at Ches ter. when he was entertained by a Mr. Taylor. He loved afterward to tell of the charm which the meadow and brook, the trees and grass had for him there. He spent much Ume in sketching and painting ; but his head was full of music, and everything suggested a musical idea to him. He was very fond of carnations, and he set a_ bunch of them to music in the album ofa daughter of his bost, with a drawing of the flowers

forgetting to set some delicate arpeggios in the music for the scent of the flowers. Op seeing the younger sister with some bell-shaped flowers in her hair, he said thatthe fairies might dance on the trum pets, al i he set them toa cap- riccio. He never tired of merry making. And one ward dusk, he, with a young people, was one of a happy| young company that was in a thicket. Some one gayly proposed | a fire; and all began to drag the boughs | and twigs into place, so that soon they | had a fine bonfire. A chemist of Brest has resurrected an | eld idea about the disp yal of the dead. He merely rubs the corpse with plum bago, suspends it in an electric copper bath, and lo! a fine coating of copper is deposited all over it. The corpse, it is said, being thas whoily shut off from air, will be thorough!v preserved and remain forever. Fruits and flowers have been preserved intact in this way. Bunches of grapes treated with the copper bath are used as decorations for the ceiling and friezework of dining room-,and the effect is extremely artie- tic. Lilies have been immersed in the} bath and delicate ly coated with dusky, | shining me al.

By this method a corpse becomes converted into a copper statue. A man might eleccroplate his deceased mother- in-law, and have her always near him. A husband micht leave it in his will that he should be thus copper-coated and set up ia the family library. Ther, if bis widow wishes to marry again, he will be on the spot as an awful warn- ing and example. Persons who can- not afford to electreplate their dead with copper may use zinc. Poor re- Jations may be disposed of in this way. Zine is good enough for them.

Curious Case of Nervous Sympathy

At the last meeting of the French Academy of Medicine, Dr. Brown-

Sequard related a very remar‘able in- stance of the powerof sympathy which came within his recent observation. A little girl was looking out of a window inahouse in the Batignolles, a few daysago. The lower sash was raised and the child had placed héer arms on the sill. Suddealy the support oa which the sash rested gave way and the window fell with considerable foree on the little giri’s arms, inflicting a severe bruise. Her mother, who was in the room at the time, happened to look to ward the window at the moment of the accident and witnessed it. She tainted with fright and remained insensible for a minute or two. When she recovered she was conscious of a severe pain iu both arms, and on examining the seat of it she was amazed to find on each arm &@ bruise Corresponding ia position to that left by the accident on the} child’s, though more extensive.

GEALED TENDERS addressed to the Post-

master General, (For Printing and Supply Branch,) and marked “Tender for Mail Bags,” will be received at Ottawa until 12 o’clock, noon, on MONDAY, the 2np NOVEMBER, 1885, for the supply of the Post Office Department of Canada with such Cotton Duck, Jute and Leather Mail Bags as may from time to time be required for the Postal Service of the Dominion.

Samples of the Bags to be furnished may be seen at the Post Office at Halifax, N. S., St. John, N. B., Charlottetown, P. E. L., Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Winnipeg, Maun., Vic- toria, B. C.,or at the Post Office Department at Ottawa.

The Bags supplied, both as regards material and manufacture, to be fully equal to the sam- ples, and to be delivered from time to time in such quantities as may be required at Ottawa.

The contract, if satisfactorily executed, shall continue in force forthe term of four years, pro- vided always the workmanship and material be satisfactory to the Postmaster General.

Each tender to state the price asked per bag in the form and manner prescribed by the form of tender, and to be accompanied by the written guarantee of two responsible parties, undertaking that in the event of the Tender being accepted, the contract shall be duly executed by the party tendering for the price demanded. Undertaking also to become bound with the contractor in the sum of two thousand dollars for the due pertorm- ance of the contract.

Printed forms of tender and guarantee may be obtained at the Post Offices above named, or at the Post Office Department, Ottawa.

The lowest or any teader will not necessarily be
