Arrangements have been made for the laying, on August 6 next, of the foundation stone of the O'Connell Memorial Church at Cahiroiveen, county Kerry, Ireland, the birthplace of the great liberator, the day selected being his birthday. The church is to atand on the site now occupied by the Church of the Holy Cross—a very old build- ing—and isto be a very handsome struc- ture, worthy of the man in whose name it is to be erected. Pope Leo XIII, is greatly interested in the project, and a short time ago granted several audiences at Rome to Canon Brosnan of Cahiroiveen, who origin- nated the idea. The Pope has sent the

foundation stone for the church from Rome, and has appointed Archbishop Croke, of Cashel, his delegate to lay it. He has also granted special indulgences to all persons who may forward the building.

The cost of the church, it is estimated, will be $125,000, of which only about $15,000 has yet been raised. The Rev. Father James K. Fitzgerald, deputed by Bishop Higgins, of the Diocese of Kerry, has for about a year been collecting funds for the church throughout the New England States with considerable success. He is now in New York, and says many of the leading citizens of Irish nationality bave promised to subscribe liberally.

The Lost Explorers.

The examination of Lieut. Melville was continued betore the Jeannette committee of inquiry at Washington on the 29th of April. A series of questions respecting the geography of the region where DeLong went were asked by the judge with a view to show that with the information in pos- session of the expedition the wisest course open was that taken by DeLong. Melville expressed his belief with emphasis that the course taken was the wisest for the safety of the party, under the circumstances. Ths witness said he had never seen any of the oflicers, while on the retreat, resting and sunning themselves while the men were compelied to work, as bad been etated by some of the witnesses. The wifness, him- self, was constantly at hard work with the men. The witness did not see any inter- ference by DeLong with the movements of Coilins on the retreat. Melville was asked if he said anything about poison or had any poison with him on the retreat. He said he and Dr. Ambler frequently talked about the proper course to pursue in ap! emergency, and arrived at the conclusion that under no circumstances was anything like cannibalism tc be permitted. If an emergency arose which would suggest can- nibalism, they determined to take cyanide of potassium and put themselves out of the | way. As a matter of fact, however, they left the vessel in haste and tcok no poison with them.
