Math & CS Society Selling Computers

In Mid-April, Jim Hancock, Director of the UPEI Computer Center, was offered the oppor- tunity to sell Zenith comput- ers at low cost to students. He approached Professor Pineau, Chairman of the Math and Com- puter Science Department, and suggested that the newly-formed Math and Computer Science So- ciety sell the computers. Profes- sor Pineau then contacted Terri Blanchard, President of the Math and CS Society and made the of- fer to her and the society.

As a result of this, the society is now selling 13 different models of computers ranging from laptop portables to powerful ATs. The prices of these computers range from $1300 to $10,000. The so- ciety receives the computers at forty-five percent off the retail price. The society then adds a five percent markup which is the lowest markup of any university run Zenith dealership. As a re- sult, students can buy computers at a saving of forty percent off the retail price.

“The main objective,” says Terri Blanchard, “ is to provide a service to the students.” By sell- ing the computers at such a small markup, the society hopes to help students afford such an expen- sive commodity. In addition, the twelve people who are volunteer- ing their time to make this service possible are gaining valuable sales experience, as well as increasing their own knowledge about com- puters. To be able to sell these computers for such low prices, the society must restrict it’s sales to

. full and part-time students.

Anyone interested in looking at these computers, whether you are interested in buying, or just are curious to see what is for sale, is invited to visit the computer center between 9 AM and 3 PM Monday to Thurs- day, or Friday 9 AM to 11:30 AM. All the demos have been gra- ciously provided by Zenith Data- Systems. Currently, two comput- ers are on display, a SuperSport portable, and a Z286, but more will be arriving soon.

The new computer outlet held a promotional demonstration on Tuesday, September 12th in the Library Breezeway, which re- ceived much interest from both the experienced computer user

and the nervous newcomer to

computer use. On display were the ZSS portable and a Z386, as well as brochures for all the differ- ent models available, and a com- plete price list for all models and styles offered. ®
