Any Canadian who doesn't feel like tramping into the bush to cut his own Christmas tree can buy one this holiday season-providing he has the money to meet the price tag. which may 11in all the way to $16.

A Canadian Press cross-country survey shows the supply of Christ- mas trees good-with a few left cvar for export to ouch. sunny climates as Hawaii and Cuba. De- mand la brisk, especially from families with several young child- ren.

A Christmas tree must b9 an evergreen but the species offered varies across tho land. Iffs spruce in the Maritimes. pine from the St. Lawrence south shore In Mon- treal and adjacent areas of Que- bec, spruce. balsam and scotch pine iii Ontario, black spruce in Manitoba and British Columbia fir Li] Saskatchewan. Alberta. and on the Pacific Coast.

In most centres, a man with a small house or apartment and with modest ambitions for his Christmas celebration can buy.a tree for horn 75 cents to $3_50, depending on the size and type.

Prices go up as the size of the tree increases. Probably the most expensive trce arc to be found in Montreal. As a sprcial service tlils icar. large department stores tlierc are offering trees at prices rang- ing from 75 cents for a three-foot nine to $7.50 for a 12-f0oter. The price is doubled ii’ the tree is spray- ed ultli bronze or silver paint.

The Christmas tree trade is big bitsmcss particularly from an ox- port standpoint. Briiish Columbia's tree harvest is worth 8600.000 an- nually. Trees from northern On- tario and parts of Quebec are ship- ped by the carload to cities in adjacent sections of the United States.

Farmers thin the Christmas trees from their woodlots and sell them by the truckload in the cities iearest to them. Or they can hire out, as tree cutters to big-scale operators and make as much as $6 a day at the rate of eight cents a tree.

The more curious among the settlers debated as to whether a guard should be set up ncar the X home to observe what was taking place there. Others thought. But when the morning broke there “was no word from either of the guards. The strange ship liad departed sometime during the night. Frankly. the settlers were troubled. Breaking the lock, they entered the house of mystery. The place bore evidence of violence and per- hops murder.

The table lay upside down on the floor, and several broken and bloodstained choirs were acattered about the premises. in an old straw mattress that lay plied up In one corner of the room the search- ers discovered a small bag contain- ing a handful of gold coins. That was all they found.

A search in the near-by bushes brought to light the two men who had been left to guard the plgcg, Both were securely roped and tied to trees.

The searchers next returned to the house of mystery and put it to the flame.

What had taken place there that nllht will over remain a mystery, for to this day no trace of those who escaped in the night on that Iilllt! sailing craft has coma to Ilghl.
