PROHIBITORY Matne.—An exchange re- ports that in Bangor on Tuesday last there were 14 persons before the court, twelve of whom were charged with drunkenness. Evi- dently the prohibitory law, so far at least as it relates to Bangor, is as dead as is the Scott Act in some cities that we could name.

Missionaky Meertinc.—A pleasant and profitable: hour may be spent to-morrow afternoon, in the Methodist Church, at the annual missionary meeting of the Sunday School. The mission will consist of child- ren’s voices accompanied by the pipe organ and cornet. And beside the efforts of young persons belonging to the school, addresses will be delivered by the Rev. Mr. Fisher, of of Alberton, and the pastor Rev. Mr. Read. The school raises quite a large sum for the the Japan mission field, out of which it has adopted the Rev. M. Kohashi, an educated native missionary.

Testinc Pusrtic Orrnton.—Another re- markable case of investigating public opin- ion by circular is furnished by the Halifax Echo. A stringent Sunday bill is before the Nova Scotia legislature, and the Echo is opposed to the measure. To test public opinion the Echo published a form of ballot and asked every person in the city to send in a yes or no vote. Already 632 votes are reported, of which 2 are in favor of the bill and 630 against it. The St. John Sun, commenting on this fact, remarks that if the Wesleyan or Witness had taken a ballot the result would no doubt have been an equally striking majority un the other side.

A Qvestion or Dory—A Washington despatch says: The Secretary of the Treas- ury recently received a letter from a resi- dent of Canada, saying that he proposes to remove to the United States, and asking if certain machines for making jackets, now used by himin Canada, will be admitted free of duty as tools of trade. He was informed that free entryof tools of trade,etc.,does not extend to machinery and other articles im- norted for use in any manufacturing estab- lishment. His inquiry was answered in the negative, and he was informed the machines would be entitled to free entry under another provision of the law, pro- vided they were manu factured in this coun- try and are in substantially the same con- dition as when exported.

Gocp Works.—The efficiency of the Fire Brigade was tested last evening for the es- pecial benefit of Mr. C. E, L. Jarvis, of St. John, who, in company with Mr. Angus, Secretary of the Board of Underwriters, has been at work for several days past readjusting the retes of iusurance. About twenty minutes to eight the alarm sounded, and ex- actly four and a half minutes later both hose teams had splendid streams playing over the cupola of King Street engine house, and the Salvage Corps and Hook and Ladder company were on the spot ready for action. Two ad- ditional streams were afterwards put on from

’ the hydrant on KingsStreet with good effect.

This is remarkably quick work, considering tnat the streets along which the hose had to bé hauled were in a very bad condition, and not one of the firemen knew that the test was to be made until the bell rang. With better streets, Chief Engineer Large says the men could do the same work in much less time. We understand that Mr. Jarvis was well satis. fied with the test. t two months:—Before Simon Brown, J. P., Hunter River, and John Deacon, J. P., North Wiltshire, Andrew Murphy, of Mill- vale, Joseph Doucette, of Rennie’s Road, Michael A. O’Brien, of New Glasgow Road, Mavrice Gallant, of Rustico, and John Mel. lett, of Charlottetown Koyalty, were eonvict- éd and fined $50 of two months’ imprisonment each. Before Peter Sinclair, J. P.. Spring- figid, and George Mallett, J. P., of Graham's Road, Bernard Croken, of Emerald, was fined $50 or two months’ imprisonment for selling, and also $50 or two monthe for keeping for sale; and nine bottles of whiskey and two gal- lons of ram seized under search warrant were ordered to be destroyed, which order was im- mediately carried into execution by Constable Whitehead. Before Henry Wadmap and Donald W. Palmer, J. P’s., Victoria, Joseph W.iStordy, of that place, was convicted aud fined $50 or two months. The Inspector is ' evidently not idle.

After routine, in reply to Mr. Jones, of | Halifax, Hon. Mr. Bowell said that no matter what the intention of the Govern- | ment might be, he had given no intimation to the press that it was intended to abandon | the proposed amendment to the Customs Act, adding the cost of inland carriage to the dutiable value of invoices.

A portion of the afternoon was spent in supply on inland revenue items, which Messrs. Cartwright, Laurier, and other Op- position speakers criticized copiously.

Hon. Mr. Costigan replied effectively to all the charges, and explained each item as it came up to the satisfaction of the House.

In the House this afternoon, Hon. Mr. Foster, replying to a question, declined to say just now whether or not any changes would be made in the tariff this season.

Replying toa question, Hon. Mr. Hag- gart to-night said that the contract with the Allan line for ocean mails was supposed | to terminate on April 12th, but the Allans | now contend that it holds good until the! fast line matter was determined. Pending | a settlement of these conflicting views, the | Government have decided to issue an order | that in case the Allans refuse to act, the| mails this week will be seut via New York.

The House resumed consideration of sup- ply to-night, and sat till a late hour.

The Banking and Commerce Committee this morning adopted the privcipal of Mr. Wallace’s anti-combine bill by a vote of 33 to 22. Strong Toronto and Montreal dele- gations were present in opposition. If the} Bill passes the Commons it will be slaugh- tered in the Senate.

The supporters of the Government from Ontario do not take kindly to the proposi- tion to spend several millions to build the Harvey-Salisbury Short Line, and the Op- position are a unit against it. If treatedon its present merits the scheme would find scant favor in the House. It is argued that the refusal of the Canadian Pacific to build the road according to the terms of the Sub- sidy Act under which they constructed the Short Line through Maine, absolves the Government and the country from the pledges then made. As intimated in the despatches some days ago, the Short Line debate may be one of the session.

Yunnel at the Fails.

Toronto, April 12.

The Government are constructing a tun- nel under the falls at Queen Victoria Niagara Falls Park,and are blasting 4 pass- age way 300 feet long. At tlie end of the tunnel there will be a large room affording a magnificent view of the immense volume of falling water from the other side.

The Jesuit Question Again.

Toronto, April 12. Mr. C. W. Bunting, of the Toronto Mau, said to-day, speaking on the Jesuit ques- tion: ** We certainly are to hold our posi- tion, and have no intention of backing out. There have been no new developments as yet, but we are preparing to hold oyr own.”

Pushing the Work.

Winpsor, Ont., April 12.

The Canadian Pacific railway put 100 extra men at work on the Windsor end of their line this morning; also large forces all along the line. The slip dock of the com- pany will run to the edge of the channel further than the slips of either of the present companies.
