Cutt has been trying to purchase the neu- trality of the Argentine Confederation by yielding up to the latter all claims to Pata- govia. The Argentine Confederation will not agree to any such comproimise, and it looks now as if it might be drawn into a .war with Chili. The prospects of the latter power are far from bright just now.
THe quickest passage on record between Boston and this city was that made by the steamer Carroll, Capt. Wright, which left the first-named port at noon on Saturday and ar- rived here at noon yesterday -—valling at inter- mediate ports. Such rapid passages must be a great benefit to importers, as well as a pleasure to the large number of passengers who patronize the Carroll and Worcester.
SuPpReEME Court. -— Richard Heartz and another vs. John Muirhead. This case has occupied the Court for some days. A verdict was, last evening, given for the plaintiff for amount of the note. For the plaintiffs, Messrs. Hodgson and Palmer ; for the defend- ant, Messrs. Haszard, Palmer and McLeod. The case now before the Court is Sarah A. Crawford: ve. James Beales—an action to re- cover a dower on certain lands on Queen Square. .
CarrLe FoR GREAT Brrraix.— Messrs. John McDonald, Felix McGirr, P. McDonald and D. Keefe have completed the purchase of eighty head of tine cattle in this Province and three hundred sheep in Prince Edward Island and this Province, which are to be sent by rail to Quebee on Friday next, to be shipped by the steamship -Vestorian, which leaves that port next Monday for Great Britain. Messrs. Felix McGirr and P. McDonald go with the shipment, and it is intended to have another lot ready for shipment in about a fortnight from the sailing of the Nestorian.—sSi. John

BLACKGUARDISM IN SoURIS ON THE SAB- sara Day. —On Sunday last a party of young: wen ef thelower and rowdy class, accom- panied by girls of the same stamp, were guilty of very disgraceful conduct on the public thoroughfares. After attending evening ser- vice, they proceeded on the road towards Harmony. When fifty yards from the church the commenced insulting all who passed them, by shouting, jeering and using insulting lan- guage. At very civil and respectable young man, who passed by in a carriage in company with another, was greeted with a perfect storm of jecrs and insults, which continued until they were out of sight. Such conduct asthison the public roads, on the Sabbath Day, is very reprebensible and deserving of severe punishment,.-Com.

Provincial Rifle Association.
Tue annual general meeting of the Pro- Vincial Rifle Association, of Prince Edward Island, was held in the City Hall on Mon- day last, when tie fullowing gentlemen Were elected as members of Council foa the present year: For Queen’s County, Major Morris, Major Geo. L. Dogherty, Capts. Freeland, McRae, and F. 8. Longworth ; fyr Prince County, Capts. Ives and Price ; or King’s County, Capts. Owen and Me- Leod. The Secretary submitted a short report, in which he referred tu the fact that but nine competitors attended last year’s Prize Meeting from King’s County, and none at all from Prince. This seeming want of interest in the Prize Meetings of the Association by the other Counties, the Secret ary attributed to the shabby manner the militia are treated by the railway authorities in the matter of transport. After some discussion, it was agreed that another effort be made by the Council to secure free transport to all militia men, in uniform, travelling by rail to attend the coyee matches. DEPARTMENT! OF
PPYUBLIC NOTICE, and particularly the
attention of DEEP SEA and INSHORE FISHERMEN, is directed to the following provisions of the Statute, 31 Vic. Cap. 69 known as the ‘‘ Fisheries Act,” passed on the 22nd May, 1868 :—
1. Section 14: Prohbits the throwing over- board er leaving of dead or decaying fish, or remains of offal of fish, or other marine animals, within any water where fishing is carried oa, or upon any fishing bank; also forbids leaving the same in any net or other fishing apparatus.
», S-ction 1}, Sub-section 2: Provides that dead or decaying fish, or any other deleterious substance, shall not be drawn into, or allowed to pass into, or be left, or remain in any water frequented by any kinds of fish men- tioned in the fishery lews.
3. Section Nub-section 7 : Dag-nets and Rab-nets and fish-ponnds are prolibited, ex- cepting under special license.
Besides the fines imposed by said Statute, lauy offender against the Fishery Lawes 1s liable to the forfeiture of the nets, material, implements or appliances used in connection with the offence.
Vishery Officers may seize upon thew own view, or on complaint, any fishing gear sub- ject to confiscation, and fine offenders forth- with.
British and foreign fishermen alike are required to conform to the ‘anadian fishery laws.
It having been established in evidence that certain kinds of nets used for mackerel and ether fish are fishcd in contravention ot the fishery laws, by destroying quantities of small fish, besides mature fishes which are thrown away dead or dying, or are left to decay on the fishing grounds, or within the inshere waters; the fishery officers are instructed to strictly enforce the fishery laws passed toprevent such illegal and injurious prac- tices. ;
They are alse instracted that British sub- jects, when fishing in British waters, are bound to conform in every respect to the Can- adian fishery laws, and that foreigners fishing within three miles of the coasts of Canada, under treaties, in common with British sub- jects, are required to do so in conformity with the fishery laws which govern the operations of British, fishermen.
