Band of Gypsys: Live at the Fillmore East

This outstanding 2-CD set features additional live tracks from the four concerts that the Band of Gypsys gave on December 31, 1969, and January 1, 1970.

Before they formed, the Jimi Hendrix Experience was in a bit of turmoil. Jimi and bassist Noel Redding had widening differences, and Jimi was under a lot of stress. That original group, formed in London, dissolved forever. Jimi had signed a very bad contract for a dollar back in ’65, I think it was, and was under pressure to put out an album for Columbia, | be- lieve (his label was Warner). He needed some new mate- rial for them, and needed it fast. Jimi had been jamming for a while with drummer Buddy Miles (Electric Flag, Wilson Pickett), and bassist/ army buddy Billy Cox. Miles

off his back. It was the quick- est way to fill Jimi’s obliga- tion. They called themselves “Band of Gypsys.” The con- certs are documented on video, the original release, Band of Gypsys, and this new collection of live tracks.

Is this the best stuff Hendrix has ever done? Per- haps. That’s saying a lot. It’s vastly different from his work with the Experience. Jimi concentrated less on the theatrics, and a bit more on the playing. Budd Miles took over as “timekeeper,” allowing Cox and Hendrix to play together and do plenty of improv/exploration. Where Miles _ lacked Mitchell’s explosive fits of drum fills, he more than made up with his soul sing- ing, and seriosly heavy grooves. Mitchell once com- mented on Miles’ heavy
