Tue Fire at Georcetrown.—Regarding the fire at McDonald Bros. Store, George- town, @ correspondent writes : ‘‘ No people could do more, men, women and children, worked like Trojans, and dving everything possible to save the building. The members of the Bar, Messrs. Davies, Hodgson, Peters, Morson and Weeks, worked admirably. Mr. Davies stood in smoke and water for two hours working, and only left when he was completely exhausted and wet to the skin, The strangers,too, from different parts of the country, took off their coats, went to work with energy, and contributed largely towards the saving of the building and the greatest portion of its contents.”

A Difliculty—lHow Met. Orrawa, July 29.

The fact has just been brought to light that when Lord Lansdowne visited the Roman Catholic University of Ottawa, a few weeks ago, an Irish American student was asked by Father Fubaret, the Superior, to read an address of welcome to Lord Lansdowne. This he declined to do, on the grsund that the Governor General belonged to a class whom he described as oppresive to his race. The difficulty was ultimately got over by one McKinnon, a Scotch Catholic student of P. E. Island, reading the address.

Riel’s Trial. Rearna, July 29.

Riel’s trial was resumed to-day. The counsel for the defence said they were ready to proceed with the trial.

Osler opened the case for the Crown. He read a document from Riel tu Major Croizer, demanding the surrender of Fort Carleton. He charged the prisoner with a disposition to further his own ends, rather than the interest of half breeds.

The speech was an able elfort, and was characterized by clearness and firmness.

At his father’s residenee, Cape Bear, June 15th, David, eldest son of David and Mary Cahoone, aged 23. The cause of his death was consuwption. In his case there were evidences given that to depart this life was only to be avsent from the body to be present with the Lord. For some time previous to his death, be was ecalmy, trusting ic Christ; and though he knew he must die, bis peace was unmolested. To his bereaved parents and brother, he left as a precions legacy,the testimony that he was going a little before to await their approach t» the other shore.

Departed this life, May 2nd, Mary Stewart, wife of Isaac Stewart, sen., aged 76 For some years she was a great sufferer, unable to leave her home, but although she was so afflicted, she bore testimony that Christ was her support, His grace was suflicient, She leaves an aged partner wbo has the sympathy of the community.
