The Crisis in Quebec.

Iris not wonderful that “the situation in Quebec” is absorbing the attention of the

people of Quebec.

ivusly impaired; and her government is in the hands of reckless and dishonest Grits. Under these circumstances, « crisis is the the most natural and the most proper thing in the world. It appears that a crisis is at hand. We are told that many of Mercier’s leading supporters have taken no pains fo conceal from him their indignation con- cerning the Baie des Chaleurs embezzle- ment. Indeed, no honest and patriotic man can lounger continue to give his confid- ence to the Mercierites. The facts brought out in evidence before the Senate com- mittee seem to be conclusive that Mercier, Pacaud & Co., conspired to rob the public of $100,000. The consultations between Mercier ard Pacaud immediately before the ‘‘steal,” the purposes to which the money was applied, the flight of Pacaud, the hasty withdrawal] of his checks from the banks, the fact that the Quebec mini- sters gefused to answer to a charge in which their honor was involved, the fact that they refused also to permit their cfti- cials to give evidence in the case,—all tend towards the conviction of the Prime Mini- ster of Quebec and several of his colleagues for conspiracy to embezzle public money to pay their private debts.

This being so, the Lieut.-Governor, of (Quebec has, as in duty bound, forced his Government to take action. It is stated that the Lieut.-Governor first of all drew the attention of his First Minister to the Baie des Chaleurs affair, to the unfinished Whelan investigation and to other scanda- lous matters charged against the govern- ment. Mercier it is said suggested ver- bally that ‘‘an immediate sitting of the legislature be called, that committees be appointed and that the charges be investi- gated thereby. This suggestion His Honor declined ; and he demanded instead that a royal commission composed of judges be named immediately and that of commissioners shall. be agreeable to

himself. The action of the Lieutenant Governor was eminently judicious and proper. Mercier must now defend himself.

—Mr. Laurier has suggested that no bye- elections be held till the revision of the voters’ lists is completed, and the Govern- ment is inclined to agree. Conservatives in close counties, and counties where lib- eral elections are contested, should see that their arms be kept bright, which signifieth that no good men be leit without a vote. This hint is given by the Montreal Gaz,tte.

EvanGceistic Meetinos.—The body of the large Methodist Church was filled again last evening. Rev. Mr. Gordon offered the opening prayer. Mr. Bliss based his re- marks on the story of Blind Bartimens and his earnest cry, ‘‘ Jesusthou Sonof David have merey on me.” At the close of his address, which was marked with more than usual power, qnite anumber in the aud- ience rose for prayer. Mr. Clark sang as a solo, ** I’m the child of a King.” An after meeting was held.

There will be no meeting to-night, ex- cepting a meeting of Pastors and Sunday School workers, which will be held in the Baptist Church at 8 o’ciuck.

To-morrow (Sunday) there will be a united meeting of the children of all the Sunday Schools, in the Brick Church, at 3 o'clock, a.m. Evangelistic meeting in the same Church at 7, p.m., after which there will be an after meeting in the basement.

We are glad to hear that the meetings will be continued next week until Friday evening, when Mr. Bliss goes to Pictou.

Hymn Books for use at these meetings can be had at the bookstores.

THe Park Prace Disaster.—The cor- oner’s jury investigating the Park Place, New York, disaster rendered its verdict on Wednesday night. It finds that while the timbers and walls of the building were of fairly good materia! and construction, the iron columns were not as strong as the specifications called for. lt finds the fall of the building resulted from the breaking of one or more of these iron columns, but that the fracture was due to some sudden shock applied to the exterior and not pri- marily due to inherent weakness. The jury recommends the legislature to provide for the periodical inspection of all build- ings used for printing, manufacturing, stor- age or similar purposes, to insure against overloading and explosives or dangerously inflammable substances in any building where other labor w employed.

The schooner had fore- sail and jib set, and was submerged to within about ten feet of the mast heads, The crew could be observed im the main rigging, and were waving their arms for at- sistance. The Princess of Wales was rounded to and a boat lowered, manned by mate Peter Macdonald and four men, who succeeded in reaching the wreck and rescu- ing the men from their perilous position It was blowing very fresh at the time, with a heavy sea running, and it was a difficult matter to regain the steamer and board her, This, however, was accomplished, but with loss of the steamer’s boat, she having got drawn under the guards in com- ing alongside owing tu the surf, and was smashed, the men having scrambled out of her on to the steamer’s deck barely in time.

The schooner proved to be the British Pearl, 77 tons register, and was bound for Charlottetown with a cargo of 102 tons round coal for Mr. Charles Lyons.

Captain Kennedy states that he left Pictou on Thureday night at eleven o'clock, and at daylight ou Friday morning when off Point Prim a heavy sea struck the forward house and carried the top away. in and the vessel began settling in the water when she was headed for shore, but went down bow first before shoal water was reached. The crew tried to get the boat (which was secured on deck) clear, but were unable te do so, and they were forced to go up the rigging where they remained about four hours or until rescued by the Frincess of Wales between seven and eight o'clock yesterday morpving, #8 already stated. The crew saved nothing except what they stood in. They were Janded at Picteu Friday forenoon, The British Pearl hails from Guysbrough, N. 8., but was owned in Bras dor, No insurance on the vessel,

The Late Corporal Macdonald.

THe body of the late Corporal Rufus Macdonal.i, whose sad death at Quebec has already been noted, will be brought home to-night by the Artillery team. The train will be due at ten minutes after eight, From the station the casket will be taken to the deceased’s late residence.

The members of the several Militia Corps, wich the Military bands, will meet at the Drill Shed to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon, at ones o'clock, sharp, for the purpose of attending the funeral of the late Corporal Macdonald. They will leave the shed at hali-past one o'clock, and at the City Building will be joined by the members ct the Fire Brigade and veterans with Galbraith’s Band. The order of the funeral procession will be as follows :

Military Bands. Firing pirty in*charge of Sergt. R. Ma- theson. Corpse on gun carriage drawn by members of No. 1 Battery, G. A. Chief Mourners.

The funeral will leave the late residence of deceased, Kent Street, for the People’s Cemetery, at a quarter to two o'clock. The route of the procession will be down Kent Street to Weymouth Street, along Wey- mouth to St. Peter’s Road, thence to Cem- etery.

Tue Norway Property.—The Pictou Standard says that Premier Abbott is thought to be about buying the Norway property from Sir Donald A. Smith. Both are expected in Pictou soon, to see the place. The Norway property is situated on a point of land overlooking Pictou harbor and just on the outskirts of the town. It is @ very pretty place, worth perhaps $60,- 000, and has been in the hands of a care- taker for a number of years.

The charge against him ‘is that he married this woman while in the States; and it is said that she bore to him a child which is now only a week old. At all events Duncan returned to the Island this summer, and went to Alberton in company with wife number two.. A re- port concerning his*second marriage and return to the Province reachad St Peter's, and was made a subject of inquiry,—the result being the arrest of the alleged biga- mist as above stated. Duncan will be ex- amined before the magistrates at St. Peter's, and if a prima fucea case be made out, will probabiy be lodged in Koug’s County jail to await trial by the Supreme Court.

It is stated that forsometiweafter his de- parture to the States, Dancan made remit tances to his!awful wife, but that these ceased altogether, and that the wronged and deserted woman has been compelled to maintain herself and her three children by | means of her own labor.

Duncan was about to take the stcamer and return to the States when caught at Summerside by Constable McKenzie.

Races at Amherst.

The Maritime Futurity Steke Races at Amherst, on Wednesday and Thursday, were largely attended. Amongst the Islanders present were J, J. Davies and William Davies, of the Hotel Davies, Con- ductor Kelly and John Munroe, of the P. E. Ll. R.; Arch. White, Ch’town; Mr. Turner and wife, Mr. Macleod, W. K Mackay and Frank Farrow, Summerside, G. B. Mackay, Clifton, W. B. Bowness, New Annan. The races were well con- tested. The judges on the first day were: Jas. A. Fraser, New Glasgow; J. J. Davies, Charlottetown; W. A. Brennan, Summer- side, Mr, Fraser acted as starter. On the second day Mr. G. B. McKay, ef Clifton, took the place of Mr. Brennan as judge, the latter having a horse entered in one of the races to take place that day. The other judges were the same as on the first day. The general result of the races has already been giveu in THe Examiner. However we give below the summaries uf the three- minute and free-for-all races :
