The only way to lessen the number of easualties—they cannot be avoided en- tirely—is to take all precautions. This is required of the owners if they wish to escape costly damage suits, but when all possible precautions have been taken, vhe can then only trust to luck,

Wine Caused the Loss of the Victoria.

It is now stated on good authority that the fearful disaster which befell the war- ship Victoria, resulting in the instant destruction of hundreds of lives, is an- vther of the long list of calamities which may be set down to the credit of strong drink. It is said that the fatal order which resulted in the collision with the Camperdown wag given in a fit of reck- lessness superinduced by too much wine drinking. Onno other ground, it is said, can it be explained why a man ordinarily so cool, discreet and skilful as Admiral Tryon, should have given an order which the commonest sailors knew could only result in disaster. It is charitable to believe that Admiral Tryon was not in a condition of mind to realize what he was about when he said that *‘six cables length” instead of eight should be the distance between the ships in that manceuvre. That two cabies of differ- ence meant a swift and awfal death to hundreds of brave men, including the admiral himself. It was wine that did it and not Admiral Tryon.—Christian at Work,

A Woman Beheaded.

A woman was beheaded in Beriin Monday—the first woman to suffer the death penalty there since Berlin was made a kaiserstadt. At 8 o'clock in the morningtwo warders led her into the courtyard, where the headsman’s bloc had been placed. Haif dead with fear the woman was placed beside the block andthere supported while the prosecutor read to her the sentence of death. Tue prisoner was told to kneel, but she ap- parently did not hear, and the warders gently but firmly forced her down until her head rested on the block. The next instant there was a gleaming flash of steel, and the head of the woman drop- ped into the basket placed to receive it,, the executioner exclaiming: ‘The sentence of the law has been executed. May God have mercy on the poos sin; ner,”

Next, frem different parts of the rock came sputtering bursts of smoke and then enormous blocis de- tached themselves from the mountyinous mass of rock, toppled slowly forward, and finally crushed into the abyss below with deafening uproar, which, mingling with the thunders of the exploding dynamite, now freed from its rocky prison, reverberated grandly among the mountains and towered ruggedly into the cloud-darkened sky. Again and again was the downfall of the huge masses of rock repeated till 180,000 tons lay like “tumbled fragments of the hills” far below. A dense white smoke, the deadly afterdamp, clung for a while around the scene of the explosion, and, when cleared away, in the place of the ike there was a great gap, in which glistened here and there pinnacles of splintered rocks.—London Telegraph,

About Opals,

The prejudice against opals appears to be disappearing. Anyhow, they are popular. There are several varieties of opal, and therefore several degrees of merit. The precious, or noble, or orien- tal opal, is the supreme. This has all tie colors, and when these colors are broken into spangles, it is tien called the harie- quin opal. Then comes the fire opal, or girasol, with hyacinth red and yellow reflection—the former comes from Hun- gary, the latter from Mexico. The com- mon, or semi epals, are non-opalescent, The hydrophane, or oculus mundi, is non-transparent, but becomes so by im- mersion in water or any transparent fluid. The cacha-long is nearly opaque and of a bluish white color. The hya- lite is colorless, pellucid and white, The opal jasper, or wood opal, is the petri- faction of wood, opalescent, but without the coloring which makes the “noble” gem so precious. —Buffalo Express.
