Fresh light has been unexpectedly thrown upon the mysterious death of Nanine Foiret, at Paris, whose step-mother is held en suspicion of baving poisoned her with chloroform. When Mme. Foiret came asa bride to Tours some ‘two years ago, she brought with ber a woman named uret, as her maid, who has remained in her service ever since. The detectives who have charge of the case felt sure that if Mme, Foiret committed the crime, Haret, if not an active participant, would et least have guilty knowledge on the subject. The woman was arrested, and by a system of terrorism permitted in some French pris- ons, a confession was obtained. She says she helped her mistress to murder the young girl. They went togetber into her room while she was asleep, and before she awoke they succeeded in fastening her hands together by the wrists. The woman then held a wet cloth firmly over the gitls moth to prevent any outcry, while Mme.- Foiret placed a sponge saturated with chloroform to her nostrils till she became unconscious. They then took a small porcelain funnel, to which a piece of rubber tubing. was attach- ed, and removing the wet cloth and open-

perhaps he has a less sonse of responsibility now than he had when a member of the ad- ministration. For this reason or some other, the Heruld’s advice does not seem to quite accord with the former practice of the ex-Minister of Marine and Fisheries. The minister was far from yielding to the threats and high language of United senators. He stoutly protested against the timid and weak policy of the home govern- ment and steadily maintained the rights of Canada. Minister Foster would *do better so far as this matter is concerned, to do as Peter Mitchell did, than todo as Peter Mitchell is now supposed to be advising. Perhaps it repents the ex-minister that he authorized the seizure of the Nickerson and other United States vessels charged with procuring bait in Canadian waters, but we do not think there is any occasion for penitence on this score. — i - i ~ Ao ———

Be a companion to your husband if he is a wise man, and if he is not, try and make him become your companion, Raise his standard; do not let him lower yours.

Let your husband know more than you do once in a while; it keeps up his self- respect, and you will be none the worse for admitting that you are not actually in- fallible.

Respect your husband’s prejudices, respect his relations, especially his mother —she is not the jess his mother because she is your mother-in-law; she loved him before you did.
