Religous Notes.

The Fredericton, N. B. Baptists are building a $16,000 church.

The United Presbyterian Assembly of the United States has derided, by a uar- row mijority to tolerate the use of organs in public worship.

The Wesleyans in Great Britain now number :—Members, 3893 630, increase 12,674 ; on trial, 39.209 ; deaths, 5 009 ; new members. 56,286. The Primitives have 191,320 members in England, and an increase iu the past year of 6 017.

Its incomes for missions last year was $176 000.

Iu order to make the burden of sup- porting a church more uniform and re- lieve the poorer members fiom paying. as they now do, the greater portion of church expenses, the Methodist publishes a system of ‘taxation whereby the value of each member's property and ineome is assessed and a pro rata tax placed thereon.

Among the Wesleyan Methodists in England there are gratifying evidences of finaucial prosperity ; new chapels are rising, and almost every week o2e or two are being opeaed. They average sit- tings for one thousand persons, and iv most cases with easy debts ouly remain- ing on them. Another gratifying sign is the spread of “* Bands of Hope”’ among the young, and the extended patronage given to the blue ribbon temperance movement,

Archbishop Watkins, who has just been collated to a Canonry iu Durham Cathedral, which has been vacant for nearly a year, has found himself en- titled to about £700 in taking possession of the stall. The Archdeacon, with a rare generosity, has placed the amount at the disposal of the Bishop of Durham, to be distributed privately, at his dis- cretion, among the most needy of the poorer incumbents of the diocese.

Probably California contained for some years the most godless populaiion in the land. Fur some years the Church seemed to be utterly without influence, while all the wealth and fashion of San Francisco was irreligious beyond des- ‘cription; but sow the churches are a decided power, and the whole Pav ific Coast is becoming as Christian as other parts of the country. Even at a disad- vantage, religion will get the upper hand ia time,

Under the auspices. of Arabi, a paper in Arabic entitled El Jehad (The Holy War) has appeared at Tan‘ah, and is eagerly perused by the Mussulmans, passages of it being read aloud in the mosques by the Imaums. It is highly inflamme tory io style and matter.

According to the Vatan, the organ of Arabi Pasha, the following are the dil- ferent political Egyptian parties :—1. jr he learned men who have studied at ‘El Azhar and the other schools at Cairo

and elsewhere. The number of students lat El Azhar is 10,000. They belong to the National party, with the exception ‘of twenty-five Sheiks. 2. The Arab ‘merchants and shop-keepers. 3. The merchants who know bow to write aud read, aud study the newspapers. 4. The ‘Sheks and delegates to the villages. 5 |The half million Koftan Christians who embrace the party of the Mussalmans 6. The army, except the Circassian offi- cers. who are secretly for Ismail Pasha ‘or Halim Pasha. 7. The fellahs, who understand politics, and hope that Arabi will liberate them from their debts aud the tyranny of the Moudirs. 8 The Arabs of the Province of Behera, who have much resemblance with the Bed- ouins, _ The true Bedouins detest politics and ‘ue fellahs.

The position of a pilot on the Suez Canal is peculiar, The master of a ves sel s bound to take a pilot for the trip through the canal, but the pilot is present, in the sight of the law, to ad- vise and not to act. The English Court ‘of Appeal has just decided the question, ‘the case arising from a collision in the canal, Under the English law the master is not responsible while a pilot is in charge One of the rules of the Suez (‘anal Company provides that a captaiu shall retain his original responsibility. The general point raised was whether English law or the Company’s rules were the standard, but the decision turvel on the relation of the pilot to the vessel at fault. The Court ruled that the pilot was present to place at the dis- posal of the master his experience aud knowledge of the canal, but that the. duty of carrying out these principles of the pilot devolved upon the captain, underthe rules of the Company. \owners, therefore, are held responsible ‘for the damages which ensued from the pilex’s negligence. | We learn with rare pleasure that ex Sanitary Commissioner Rufus K. The scene of Irish crime seems to have somewhat shifted of late.
