It will be remembered that experiments were made at different times and under varying con- ditiove with three regiments from each of the several brigades. In one abstinence wasrigidly enforced and every man was forbidden to drink any alcohol whatever while the test lasted; in the second malt liquor was Ooly permitted, and in the third aration of whiskey was given to each man. The re-alis were that the whiekey drink- ers displayed more dash at first, but gen- erally in about fcuc ca bi s®showed signs of fatigue, and weskness; inose who were given beer showed somewhat longer en- durance, though displaying less dash at firet ; and the total abstainers improved daily ,in activity and staying powers. The sober man is¢ the one who gete there, whetber his occupation is fighting or working with hand or brain.

McDonald as deacon and sub deacon. Rev. P.C. Gauthier, of St. Duortae’s College, acted as mester of ceremonies.

It con- tains 1008 large pages, and over 300 illustrations, some of them in colora. The Free Edition is precisely the same as that soid at $1.50 except only that the booksare bound ia strong manilla paper covers, in-~ stead of cloth.
