Telegram,—

“A resolution was passed ostentatiously congratulating his rival, Mr. Martin on his success in British Columbia, while for Mr. Sifton there was naught but indignant denunciation. A reference to the rejec- tion by the senate of his Yukon railway contract provoked applause, His admivis~ tration ot the Yukon was bitterly con- demned. His rew personal organ here was repudiated in the name of honest liberalism. His opposition to the interests of Winnipeg was bitterly de~ nounced. His distribution of the patron- age was caustically censured. His sub- serviency tothe C P Rwas angrily in- veighed against. For failing to assert his Opposition to the St Andrews rapids job, the member for Winnipeg was called up- on to resign. Seldom has any public man been so aseailed and humiliated by his own party.”

It is pleasing to note that honest and economical men in the Liberal party are openly opposing the shady transactions» the boodling and extravagance, of the Government. We hope, ere long, to see the same spirit exhibited throughout the whole country. Unscrupulous politicians ought to be taught that they cannot do as they like with impunity.

THE CRISIS IN FRANCE.

It was supposed that the opponents of the government in France would have per-~ mitted M. Brisson to remain in office untiy after he had backed down in respect to Fashoda; #0 that the odiom resulting from the settlement of that matter would fall upon the Brisson Cabinet. But the sup- position has not been verified. Influenced by the army, the French Chamber of Depu- ties hastened to give M. Brisson his conge. The motives for this hasty action are very much mixed. It is certain that the French army leaders desire {0 overawe the Court of Cassation which has the Dreyfus case under review. It is certain that the mob of Paris, moved by the army leaders, is full of the feeling which finds expression in the cry ‘‘down with the Jews,” and that the mob was infuriated by M. Brisson’s action’ in re-opening the Dreyfus case after it wasZdiscoveredthat the evidence upon which Dreyfus was con- victed was forged. But whether or not the forced resignation of M. Bris~
