Tragic Incident.
Vienna, Nov. 21. A tragic incident is reported from East- ern Hungary. A clerzyman, with his wife and child, while driving in a sleigh feom Krasnisora to the neighboring village of Khslonka, a pack of ravenous [wolves pur- sued them. ‘The mother was terror stricken and let the child fall from her arms. The father leaped from the sleigh to save the child. Father and child were at once fiercely attacked by the wolves. The father jought desperately and killed two wolves. They were, however, at last overcome, and both devoured. Meanwhile the horses had rushed onward with the sledge, still bear- ing the agonized mother. In her agony of terror she gave premature birth to a babe, which was dead, and she herself died soon after. ‘Thus a whole family perished inside of an hour.

J. - 7) om «+ e The title lately conferred upon Sir John McDonald is described as follows :—The Knights of the Bath is the second order of rank in Great Britain, the first being the order of the Garter. The name of the order is derived from the ceremony of bathing, which used to be practised at the inauguration of a knight, asan emblem of
the purity henceforth required _ of him by the laws of chivalry. The ceremony is of unknown antiquity, and is spoken of by writers even
in the 15th century, as an ancient custom. The earliest authentic instance of its ob- servance in England is in the time of Henry IV., who, in preparing for the coronation, made forty-six knights at the tower of London, who had watched all the night before, and bathed themseives. The last Kuights of the Bath created in the ancient form were at the coronation of Charles Il. in 1661. From that time till the accession of the House of Hanover the erder fell into oblivion. It was revived by George |. in 1720. Be- sides the sovereign, a prince of the blood, and the grand master, the order then consisted of thirty-five knights. Bat at the close of the war with France in i815, in order toreward the merits of many distinguished officers the limits of the order were extended. But it remained purely military, and it was not until 1847 that it was placed on its present footing by the admission of civil kuights, commanders and eompanions. There are three classes of knights of the bath—

The price of a Frenchman's head is minutely stated in a Chinese proclamation recently issued by the Canton officials to encourage their countrymen against the fee. The value of the prize varies, of course, with the grade of the slain. Thus £35 will be paid for the head of each com- mon seldier or sailor, and the tariff rises from £175 and a manderinship with the peacock’s feather for an inferior officer to £3,509, and a manderinship with the king- fisher’s feather for the splendid trophy of a commander in-chief. Capture of ships and cannon are to be rewarded in similar pro. portion, and the ingenious Chinaman who can originate a plan fleading to the defeat of the French shall be paid £10,500.
————— et A most enthusiastic meeting of citizens was held in the Mechanic’s Hali, Montreal, on the 17th inst., to make arrangements for a welcome to Sir John Macdonald on his return from England, and for the pub- lic demonstration in honor of his fortieth anniversary of politica] life, the mayor pre. siding. It was announced that Her Majesty the Queen had conferred on the veteran Premier the exalted honor of the Grand Cross of the Bath, and a congratula- tory cablegram was ordered to be sent to Sir John, signed by the mayor on behalf of the citizens. An influential committee was formed to carry out the arrangements, and to make the demonstration the grandest ever seen in the city, and worthy the occa- sion which calls it forth.

She leaves six sons and two daughters, together with a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn their irreparable loss. The last sad rites were performed on Wednesday morning, 12th inst. The funeral cortege, which was a very large one, pro- ceeded from her residence to St. Joseph's Church, where a solemn requiem mass was cele- brated by the Rev. James McDonald, P. P. fhe sacred edifice wes heavily draped and lighted with numerous tapers. The ceremony was impressive and solewn, aud at the con- clusioa the funeral cortege re formed and pro- eceded to the cemetery, where the deceased, beloved and respected for her many virtues, was laid to rest. At Victoria Cross, on the 5th of November, inst., after a few weeks of severe lilness which she bore with remarkable resignation to the Divine Will, Mary Koss, the beloved wife of Mr. Ronald Lamont, of that place, in the 66th year of hear age, leaving a sorrowing husband and a family of three sons and three daughters, all married except the youngest daughter, to mourn their loss. Her trust in the merits of her Redeemer was lively and steadfast, and it may well be said that her end was peace. She was the third daughter of the late Donald Ross, Esq, of Flat Kiver, who emigrated from the Isle ef Skye, in the year 1803, in the ship Polly.
